The off-sale of liquor is a moral issue, according to an opponent of the city ordinance that Mitchell voters will consider Nov. 2.
An advocate of the ordinance, meanwhile, says it’s simply a matter of properly marketing Mitchell as a regional trading center.
Mitchell City Finance Officer Marilyn Wilson said Friday afternoon that enough petition signatures have been validated to force an election on Sunday off-sale liquor, and the City Council will convene Wednesday to set an election date.
Wilson said 840 of the estimated 886 signatures that were turned in were from registered voters residing in Mitchell. Only 481 valid signatures were needed to force an election.
