Schmidt has big day at national tourney

Jason Schmidt celebrated his 21st birthday in style Tuesday. The Mitchell native hit a grand slam and just missed hitting for the cycle in Mount Marty’s first game of the day in Lubbock, Texas, where the Lancers were playing in the NAIA national tournament.

Tigers’ season ends in Yankton

YANKTON — The Mount Marty women’s basketball team made quick work of its opening round foe, cruising past Dakota Wesleyan 61-41 Tuesday in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena. Mount Marty continued its dominance over Dakota Wesleyan after beating DWU in the regular season twice. The first meeting was on Dec. 2 in Mitchell with the score ending 71-54 and Feb. 10 at home with the score ending 70-45.

Dorsey scores 30 as Tigers push winning streak to 11 games

YANKTON — It didn’t take long for Darrin Dorsey to regain his offensive touch. In 10th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan’s 73-63 win over Concordia Saturday, Dorsey ended up with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and had six turnovers, but the junior guard recovered quickly and dropped 30 points on Mount Marty in the Tigers’ 68-56 win at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena Wednesday.

Lancers hit 13 3-pointers in 70-45 win over Tigers

YANKTON — Ask the Mount Marty Lancer players, and they would say that Dakota Wesleyan is a rivalry game. Though the Great Plains Athletic Conference foe visited Laddie E. Cimpl Arena with seven losses in their last eight games, the home team was ready to play well. The Lancers played solid defense and used hot outside shooting to sink the Tigers 70-45 Wednesday night in women’s basketball action in Yankton.

DWU escapes with win over Mount Marty

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team couldn’t stop Mount Marty’s 3-point shooters all night Wednesday. But the Lancers couldn’t figure out DWU’s post play, either. In the end, the post play outranked the 3-point shots. Tiger senior Preston Broughton scored on a dunk and completed the three-point play after drawing a foul with 46 seconds left to play in the game to give DWU a 78-74 lead. Spencer Yackley hit a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to cut the lead to two, but Darrin Dorsey hit the back end of a pair of free throws to help preserve the Tigers’ 79-76 win at the Corn Palace.

Tiger women fall to No. 9 Mount Marty

The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team came close to catching the No. 9-ranked team in the country Wednesday night, but it couldn’t quite close the gap. The Tigers got within five points with just over seven minutes left to play against Mount Marty, but the Lancers were able to pull away for a 71-54 win.
