City slightly over budget as mosquito counts fall
Mitchell’s Parks and Recreation Department is barely over its budget for mosquito control this year. That’s not too bad, since the city was bombarded with the winged bloodsuckers this spring and summer, according to Dusty Rodiek, director of the department.
“We’re slightly over our mosquito budget,” Rodiek said. “I still have to figure in some staffing.”

West Nile scarce in S.D.
SIOUX FALLS — There’s plenty of water and plenty of mosquitoes, but surprisingly low evidence of the West Nile virus in South Dakota, apparently because the sometimes-deadly disease didn’t get a foothold in the bird population this summer.Only four human West Nile infections have been reported. Trapping and testing have found no infected mosquito pools, although traps collect only a tiny percentage of the vector mosquito population available to transmit the disease among birds and from birds to humans.

Mosquito battle to resume
Mitchell will be fogged for mosquitoes tonight or Friday, Mayor Lou Sebert said Wednesday afternoon.“I think we’re going to do it in the next couple days,” he said.
He said mosquito numbers justify the fogging. The city checks five traps in city parks every day to monitor the mosquito population.

Mosquito population expected to grow even more
Mitchell’s mosquito population is massive, and so is the nuisance the bugs are causing. And it could get worse.
“It’s hard to say how bad it’s going to get, but it’s probably going to be as bad as we’ve seen it,” said Tom Kippes, Mitchell Park and Recreation Department’s field operations supervisor.

Slap! There seems to be –- slap! –- an awful lot of — slap! — mosquitoes right now. Slap!Just ask Harry Knecht, who lives along Lake Mitchell at 128 S. Harmon Drive.
“This is the worst I’ve ever seen in my life,” Knecht said Wednesday afternoon as he and a reporter swatted at skeeters.
He has lived along the lake for 10 years and has never noticed such an intensive aerial assault as this summer.
