Only 5 percent of the money that tax-exempt hospitals spent on behalf of their communities in fiscal year 2009 went to public-health programs. The lion’s share went to free and subsidized patient care.
PIERRE — Twenty-three rural hospitals in South Dakota will receive a total of $278,037 in federal funding for projects to improve patient access, reduce medication errors, reduce hospital re-admissions and improve operations.
WASHINGTON — Sens. Tim Johnson and John Thune have co-sponsored legislation to extend a rural hospital mortgage insurance program that has already helped hospitals in 10 states, including South Dakota.
