Olson wins seat on City Council
A newcomer to city politics but an old hand on the state political scene has earned a spot on the Mitchell City Council.Mel Olson, a former member of the state Senate and the state House of Representatives, won a spot on the council by gathering 49.88 percent of the vote in Tuesday's Mitchell council election.

Council candidates opine on amphitheater proposal
There are subtle differences in the Ward 1 Mitchell City Council candidates’ opinions about building a fixed-seat performance facility in the grassy amphitheater alongside Lake Mitchell.Mel Olson said he’d be inclined to support the project if noise concerns could be addressed by limiting the number of events. Allen Lepke said he wants to see how a test event goes this summer before committing to a position. Nathan Truitt said he’s neutral on the proposal at this point.

Board hopeful questions laptop policy; others show support
With one exception, the candidates for Mitchell School Board say the district must continue funding its laptop initiative.In a written response to a Daily Republic questionnaire, Jason Kurtenbach said “the laptop initiative needs to be backed off.” He believes the program warrants a closer look with the district’s looming budget crunch for 2010-11.

Candidates disagree on ‘rubber stamp’ concerns
The “rubber stamp” issue will doubtless be a hot topic of debate Thursday, when four Mitchell school board candidates square off in a public forum. The top vote-getters in the school board race will win the two available at-large seats.Incumbent board member Neil Putnam is running for a fourth term. The remaining seat will be vacated in July by outgoing board member Bob Everson, who decided not to run for re-election. Also running are Craig Guymon, Theresa Kriese and Jason Kurtenbach.

Candidate views differ over arena possibilities
Incumbent Councilman Allen Lepke supports pursuing the project in partnership with the local hospital and college.
Nathan Truitt said he is not definitively for or against the project yet, but he generally supports building an arena and views the partnership with the hospital and college as “the only direction we should go.”
