PIERRE — The state Department of Transportation plans to spend $32.4 million more on highway construction throughout South Dakota in the coming year, while reducing spending on other operations by about $18 million.
Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist explained the plan Thursday during a meeting with the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Appropriations, whose members oversee state government’s budget.
PIERRE — The South Dakota Transportation Commission is back in the business of making development grants for local projects.
The local development program’s funding was cut in half in 2007, from $3 million to $1.5 million, as part of Gov. Mike Rounds’ directive that the state Department of Transportation scale back to preservation mode.
There was such a backlog of previously promised grants that no new ones could be made in recent years under the reduced funding.
PIERRE — Sometimes no news is the real news. That was the case Thursday, when the state Transportation Commission formally proposed South Dakota’s latest five-year plan for highway work.
The commissioners, who have the authority to spend money but have no power to raise it, had no choice but to keep DOT in the same “preservation mode” holding pattern of recent years.
What good is a Department of Transportation physical?
I used to drive for Palace Transit until I had to take a DOT physical in February of this year. I failed the physical. The main reason was that I did not have enough peripheral vision in my left eye along with me being a diabetic and having a minor heart problem.
