DETROIT (AP) — After hitting a 30-year low in 2009, U.S. auto sales are poised for a second straight year of growth — the result of easier credit, low interest rates and pent-up demand for cars and trucks created by the Great Recession.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alexi Casilla singled home the winning run with one out in the 12th inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied past Detroit 6-5 in the AL Central tiebreaker Tuesday night, completing a colossal collapse for the Tigers.
The Tigers became the first team in major league history to blow a three-game lead with four games left. The Twins overcame a seven-game gap in the final month, went 17-4 to pull even on the final weekend and won their fifth division title in eight years.
DETROIT (AP) — Those pesky Twins forced the Detroit Tigers to keep their champagne on ice.
Scott Baker got plenty of run support and pitched Minnesota to a testy 8-3 victory on Thursday, preventing the Tigers from clinching their first division title in 22 years.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers were down after absorbing a difficult loss in the opener of their critical day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.
Their ace took over from there.
Justin Verlander kept the Tigers on top in the AL Central, pitching eight innings in a 6-5 victory Tuesday night that restored their two-game lead over the scrappy Twins.
“After the first game, this win was huge,” Verlander acknowledged.
DETROIT (AP) — The AL Central showdown was put on hold.
Steady rain Monday night postponed the opener of a crucial four-game series between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. The first-place Tigers lead the Twins by two games with seven to play.
DETROIT (AP) — Brett Favre is set to break the NFL record for consecutive starts. Chances are, he will have fond memories of the milestone-making game in a Minnesota Vikings uniform against perhaps his friendliest foe: the Detroit Lions.
Favre has 8,524 yards passing against the lowly Lions, his highest total versus any team, and the first of 25 career victories against them was in his first playoff game in 1994.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Michael Cuddyer’s two-run homer was all Brian Duensing needed to beat Detroit and move Minnesota within three games of the AL Central lead, energizing the Twins in a 3-0 victory over the Tigers Friday night.
This is the closest the Twins (75-72) have been to first place since Aug. 2. They’re 6-1 at home this year against Detroit.
