WESSINGTON SPRINGS — As each day passes, a new senior/community center gets closer to fruition in Wessington Springs.
The 3,500-square-foot center is being built just south of Main Street near Springs Inn to replace an aging structure on Main Street.
After touring the lake, the Mitchell City Council will dive into the proposed community center project tonight.
The council, acting as the Public Works Committee, will tour Lake Mitchell with the Lake Mitchell Advisory Committee at 5 p.m. before starting its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.
The proposed community center tops the council’s agenda. Under the proposal, the city will team with Dakota Wesleyan University and Avera Queen of Peace to build the facility on the DWU campus. The project, which could cost between $15 million and $19 million, has been under discussion for months, but talks have heated up in recent weeks.
The second anniversary of Mitchell’s failed arena election passed quietly last week as behind-the-scenes work continued on a new proposal.
“We’re tweaking plans and still trying to come up with a solution,” City Council President Jeff Smith said this week.
It was Sept. 18, 2007, when city voters rejected a property-tax increase that was proposed to help fund construction of a $25 million, 7,000-seat arena along the state Highway 37 bypass in northern Mitchell.
To the Editor:
As leadership within Mitchell continues to change and evolve, I can only hope that when individuals take office their vision for our community expands from “good streets, quality water, a cleaned-up lake and working sewers” to one of “making our community and region the best it can be.”
Over 100 volunteers have donated in excess of 3,000 hours over the past nine months as part of the Focus 2020 planning efforts.
A press release issued jointly Friday by the top officials of the city of Mitchell, Dakota Wesleyan University and Avera Queen of Peace Health Services said that “discussions have started” regarding a potential three-way partnership on a multi-use facility at DWU that could include an arena, wellness center and indoor pool.
