Promoting baseball to the younger crowd was the goal of Saturday’s Canaries Spring Classic, and judging by the number of kids running around throughout the game and the line of youngster waiting to get autographs from the Sioux Falls Canaries, that goal was accomplished.
Mitchell Baseball Association President Jim Larson estimated that 1,000 people showed up for the event, including more than 300 kids. Some of the kids weren’t sure who to root for — the Canaries or the South Dakota Amateur All-Star team — but the between-inning games and entertainment gave them plenty to do.
The Sioux Falls Canaries will be back in Mitchell this weekend for the second annual Mitchell Baseball Association Spring Canaries Classic, but this year, the game — and the entire day — will have a much more local feel. This year, the day will start with two amateur games featuring four area teams, a clinic for kids and the marquee matchup of the night will feature the Canaries against the South Dakota Amateur All-Stars.
