Letters to the Editor
Time to raise taxes to fund what SD needs To the Editor: Imagine a waiting room full of patients with a variety of health issues. The doctor comes in and says, “We’re out of most of our medications and supplies, so today we’ll only treat colds. The rest of you will have to wait until we get out budget fixed in a month or two. We’re sorry, but sometimes you need to make decisions like this. It’s hard, but we’ll do what we can. It’s not our fault.”February 12, 2011

Graves: Staff numbers may have to be reduced
Like dozens of other education leaders in the state, Mitchell School District Superintendent Joe Graves is waiting to hear what Gov. Dennis Daugaard will announce in his budget speech today.“I don’t know what he’s going to say. Everyone is saying the best is going to be zero and the worst a 10 percent cut,” Graves said Tuesday. “Anything that is not an increase is going to be tough. It’s going to mean we’re going to have to make a cut.”

On eve of Daugaard speech, legislators brace for big cuts
PIERRE — State lawmakers seemed resigned Tuesday that they will be in a political box after Gov. Dennis Daugaard calls for sweeping budget cuts in a special address today to the Legislature.More than a few legislators, Republicans and Democrats alike, sounded more interested in raising state taxes, rather than pursue the reductions of 10 percent or more they expect the new Republican governor will recommend for state government’s general fund budget.

In Other Words: SDPB picks up where others leave off
I was disappointed but not surprised to see The Daily Republic’s brazen attack on public broadcasting in your Nov. 5 editorial. Using the cover of our state budget woes, and the battle cry of “no competition with private enterprise,” the article salivated at the prospect of being able to take the hatchet to South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Contrary to the impression left by your editorial, SDPB has already taken its 10 percent reduction in its general fund appropriation since fiscal year 2009.By Susan Wismer , November 20, 2010
