Mitchell JV baseball team picks up first win By The Daily Republic SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell JV spring baseball team split a pair of games Monday, and picked up its first win of the year. Mitchell lost to Sioux Falls Washington 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader and won 6-2 in the second game.

Makenzie Hageman and Hailey Brunke each had two top-eight finishes at the meet and Katie Johnson had one.

DWU’s Burback named GPAC golfer of the week By The Daily Republic Chelsea Burback has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference golfer of the the week, it was announced Thursday. The Northglenn, Colo., native posted a pair of back-to-back low rounds in the third and fourth conference qualifiers to help the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team win its fifth GPAC championship last week. In the third qualifier Burback shot an 85. She improved her score by five strokes in the fourth qualifier by shooting an 80, which tied her for first place with DWU teammate Lauren Fitts in that qualifier.

DWU’s Lukkason named GPAC player of week By The Daily Republic Dakota Wesleyan University’s Michael Lukkason was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference player of the week, it was announced Tuesday. The senior shortstop batted .632 last week and hit four home runs to help the Tigers to a pair of wins, one coming against Mount Marty and another against Dordt.

DWU softball game postponed By The Daily Republic The Dakota Wesleyan University softball game vs. Mount Marty today has been postponed. The game has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. April 30. The Tigers are 6-18 overall and 4-6 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

Wolters tabbed as All-American By The Daily Republic South Dakota State University guard Nate Wolters was named a third-team All-American by The Associated Press Monday. Wolters was 1 of 15 players to garner All-American honors. The guard averaged 22.3 points per game and 5.8 assists this season. Wolters is the first men’s player from SDSU to be named an All-American since the team moved to Division I.

Area athletes win Knights of Columbus state free-throw contest By The Daily Republic CHAMBERLAIN — Three area youth athletes won state titles at the South Dakota Knights of Columbus state free throw contest earlier this month. The event was held March 3 at the St. Joseph’s Indian School gymnasium. Forty-three boys and girls, ages 10-14, throughout the state competed against their peers in the same age group for the top five or six places.

USD women’s basketball team makes WBI semifinals VERMILLION (AP) — The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team has moved into the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The Coyotes beat Lamar 71-48 in the quarterfinals on Sunday. USD will host a semifinal matchup with McNeese State on Thursday night. If the Coyotes win they will play at either Pennsylvania or Detroit in the championship next weekend.

DWU adds game with Augustana By The Daily Republic The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team has added a game to its schedule. The Tigers will now play Augustana College in one nine-inning game 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls. The Tigers lost 10-4 to the Vikings March 15 in Sioux Falls.

DWU baseball, softball make schedule changes By The Daily Republic Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball and softball teams’ schedules have been altered. The baseball team’s home opener vs. Valley City State University, originally scheduled to be a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, has been canceled. The Tigers are scheduled to host Briar Cliff University Thursday.

Taylor named CBH Most Valuable Player By The Daily Republic Kimball/White Lake senior Jesse Taylor was named the Custer Battlefield Highway Conference most valuable player for boys’ basketball. Taylor was also named to the first team, along with teammate Jacob Kirsch, a senior, Corsica/Stickney senior Adam Bormann, Ethan junior Blake Bartscher and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket senior Nick Miller.
