Mitchell boys cruise past Lynx 60-37
BRANDON VALLEY — Mitchell defeated Brandon Valley 60-37 Thursday night in boys’ high school basketball action.
Head coach Gary Munsen said his team played a better game than its first matchup of the season against the Lynx on Jan. 17.

Kernels hold off Lynx
For the third time this season, the Mitchell High School girls’ basketball team defeated a team it previously lost to this season.
With a game-high 22 points from Kerri Young and a strong defensive effort by Kelli Schlimgen on Kate Swenson, the Kernels defeated Brandon Valley 60-53 Tuesday night at the Corn Palace.

Kernels record 35 total takedowns in 37-24 ESD dual win over Brandon Valley
It was evident that the Mitchell wrestling team was making a strong effort to practice its takedowns Monday night.
Mitchell — which swept the final eight matches of the night — piled up 35 total takedowns in its match against Brandon Valley, winning the Eastern South Dakota dual, 37-24.

Big first quarter leads MHS to win over Lynx
For three quarters of Saturday’s high school basketball game, Brandon Valley stifled Mitchell with a 2-3 zone defense that left Mitchell’s offense looking nearly as sluggish as in Tuesday night’s 43-36 loss to Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
But this time, Mitchell did just enough damage in the first quarter to make up for what happened in the final three. The Kernels shot 64.7 percent from the field and scored 22 points in the first eight minutes, helping Mitchell hold off a late charge from the Lynx (2-5) as the Kernels picked up a 52-48 win at the Corn Palace.

Having last traveled to take on Brandon Valley just 11 days ago, the Mitchell Kernels shouldn’t be surprised by anything the Lynx throw at them in tonight’s 11AA playoff opener.

Sumner, Lynx beat Kernels 41-6
BRANDON — Brandon Valley all-state quarterback Austin Sumner got off to a slow start during Friday’s high school football game in Brandon, but heated up quickly as the Lynx cruised past Mitchell for a 41-6 Eastern South Dakota Conference win.
Sumner completed only one of his first five passes as rain fell early in the game — that one pass happened to be an 85-yard touchdown strike on the second play from scrimmage — and Sumner eventually finished 11-for-19 for 266 yards and six touchdowns. Five of those touchdowns and 260 of those yards came in the first half.

MHS focusing on all-state QB tonight against Brandon Valley
After a brutally cold and snowy Friday night last week, Mitchell might have been the only high school football team in the state hoping for repeat weather conditions in tonight’s game.
Last week, Mitchell beat Watertown 14-0 in a game played in a steady snowfall with a wind chill in the low 20s. Against a running team like Watertown, the weather probably didn’t make much of a difference.
