George Steinbrenner is dead. The Boss was a tyrant but he restored the New York Yankees to the dominant role in baseball after buying them in 1973. Legend or loud-mouth jerk with a big wallet?

ABERDEEN — Thad Campbell scored two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help lead the South past the North 28-17 in the South Dakota High School All-Star football game Thursday at Swisher Field in Aberdeen.
Campbell finished with 10 rushes for 58 yards and Wagner’s Mitch Breen caught a 12-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for the South.
Sanborn Central’s Lukas Van Laecken ran for 29 yards on four carries, Marion’s Brad Tunge rushed five times for 19 yards, Bon Homme’s Michael Ruppelt rushed four times for eight yards and Alexandria’s Austin Letcher had one rush for five yards.
ABERDEEN — Former Mitchell Christian star Jesse Tolsma scored 15 points and Gregory’s Adam Mikkelsen had 10 for the South All-Star team when it fell to the North team 84-83 in the South Dakota boys’ basketball all-star game Wednesday night at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen.
Tolsma also had three assists and a steal, while Mikkelsen shipped in nine rebounds and five blocks for the South squad.
Most all-star games in any sport do not feature a lot of defense, but this year’s all-star volleyball match was an exception to the rule.
In a close match the North defeated the South team by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21 in the South Dakota All-Star Volleyball contest played at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen on Wednesday.
For the South, Mount Vernon’s Sarah Vermeulen had 23 digs, one block and six kills. Marion’s Cara Schardin had eight digs, a kill and an assist, and Wagner’s Keaya Weber had 10 assists. Wagner’s Jilianne Doom had seven digs, four kills and a block.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have become a lethal combination hitting back-to-back in the Minnesota Twins’ batting order.
Now the pair can’t help but wonder what it would be like to do the same thing in the All-Star game.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carl Crawford’s glove and a dominant bullpen helped save the AL’s streak.
Crawford pulled back a home run with a leaping grab an inning before Curtis Granderson tripled and scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth, giving the American League a 4-3 victory Tuesday night at the new Busch Stadium.
The AL has won seven straight games since 2002’s 7-7, 11-inning tie at Milwaukee and is 12-0-1 since its 1996 defeat at Philadelphia — the longest unbeaten streak in All-Star history.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins will send a familiar trio to the All-Star game later this month: Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau and Joe Nathan.
The teams were revealed Sunday afternoon.
