FORT PIERRE - Stanley County State's Attorney Tom Maher announced in a news release today that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Fort Pierre man accused of stealing and abusing a barrel horse owned by a Mitchell woman.
The prosecutor handling the investigation into the alleged theft and abuse of a Mitchell woman’s barrel-racing horse says the version of events that was reported early on in the media and on blogs was not accurate.
Tom Maher, the state’s attorney for Stanley County, declined to identify any specific report but said he was referring generally to reports that “there was a horse that was stolen and tortured.”
With the completion of the Fort Pierre Rodeo behind her, Wendy Halweg made a final check on her horse, Dually, at 4:30 a.m. on the morning of July 5.
Two hours later, she awoke to find the horse gone from the County Fairgrounds.
