Disappointed with recent letter-writer To the Editor: I read with interest and disappointment the letter to the editor on Saturday, Jan. 22, written by Stacy Nettinga regarding the city’s outdoor skating area. This is a case where Stacy wrote to the public without knowledge regarding the city’s outdoor skating rink. The city has provided outdoor public skating at Munroe Park for many years. This year, it was moved to the Activities Center area, with my approval, for personal efficiencies, off-street parking and the availability of a warming area and concession in the Activities Center.

Golden Eagles run past Chargers Matt Nielsen’s 26-point performance in an 85-55 win over fifth-ranked Sully Buttes has given the Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team’s opponents someone else to worry about in an already-potent lineup. The contest at the Corn Palace, which was part of the 28th annual Hanson Classic, was dominated from the start by MCHS, which is ranked third in this week’s Class B poll. Led by two 3-point baskets and eight total points from Nielsen and cold shooting from the Chargers, the Golden Eagles exploded to an 18-2 lead after the first quarter.

New Hanson Classic schedule announced

For Hanson High School Athletic Director Jim Bridge, rescheduling the Hanson Classic — which was postponed Saturday — has been a mess. School cancellations throughout the area Friday and Monday haven’t helped the matter, nor have the two Dakota Wesleyan basketball games already scheduled for the Corn Palace this Saturday, the new date for the 28th annual Classic.

The Hanson boys’ basketball Classic, scheduled for today at the Corn Palace, has been postponed due the inclement weather. The event, which was scheduled to include nine games beginning at 9 a.m., has been pushed back one week until Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Corn Palace.

The Hanson Boys' Basketball Classic that was scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Corn Palace in Mitchell has been postponed due to inclement weather. The classic is now scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30.

Hanson Classic in limbo due to weather

For 28 years, the weather has cooperated with the Hanson Classic, but that streak is in serious jeopardy this year. With freezing rain and snow expected to begin tonight and last into Saturday, a decision will be made at 2 p.m. today whether to let Saturday’s Hanson Classic go on as scheduled or to postpone the event. In its 28-year history, the boys’ event has never been postponed, and the girls’ event, which was played Saturday, hasn’t either.

SMV falls to ELB at Hanson Classic

SMV falls to ELB at Hanson Classic No. 6 Elkton-Lake Benton didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter Saturday until their were 12 seconds left, but the Elks’ defense helped preserve a 54-47 win over No. 9 Stickney/Mount Vernon in a girls’ basketball game at the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace.
