U.S. attorney pledges action plan to help tribes
OACOMA — The Tribal Listening Conference at Cedar Shore Resort certainly wasn’t the first time people gathered to ponder the myriad problems afflicting South Dakota’s American Indian tribes.Through the decades, ideas and leaders have come and gone, and the crime and poverty on many reservations has persisted. Still, a mix of about 150 state, federal and tribal officials gathered Thursday to plan and hope for a better future.

Vander Pol scores 24 points to lead Dakota Christian in 71-45 win
KIMBALL — Mitch Vander Pol had 24 points and eight rebounds Monday as Dakota Christian won its season opener 71-45 over Kimball in high school boys’ basketball action in Kimball.
Lee Niewenhuis added 15 points and five assists for Dakota Christian and Tommy Holleman scored nine points. Josh DeWaard had eight rebounds and Cooper Dykstra had five assists as the Cadets shot 54 percent from the field and had a 32-17 advantage on the boards. Dakota Christian shot 4-for-11 from the line.

White Lake/Plankinton holds on for win over Gregory
GREGORY — The Gregory High School football team had a third-and-goal with 40 seconds left in the game for the chance to win, but White Lake/Plankinton intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the regular season with a 25-22 win over the Gorillas.
Gregory led 14-12 at halftime, but White Lake/Plankinton opened the fourth quarter with two scores.

Howard beats Hanson 34-28 in double OT
HOWARD — The Howard High School football team overcame four fumbles and a tough Hanson team Friday night and won 34-28 in double overtime in Howard.
Pierce Smith scored on a 72-yard run to put Hanson up in the fourth quarter, but Zach Torkelson scored to tie the game with three minutes left to play on an 18-yard run and the ensuing two-point conversion.

Winner edges Belle Fourche, 10-3
BELLE FOURCHE — The Winner defense held Belle Fourche to a single field goal Friday in its 10-3 victory in a high school football game in Belle Fourche.
Jayd Knodell scored the Warriors’ lone touchdown on an 8-yard run in the second quarter and finished with 112 yards rushing.
The Warriors also scored on a safety in the third quarter.

WAGNER — The Wagner High School football team ran for 266 rushing yards and held Bon Homme to 21 Friday in the Red Raiders’ 14-7 win in Wagner.
Both teams scored in the first quarter, and the score stayed knotted at 7 until Mitch Breen scored on a 23-yard run in the third quarter.

Last-second TD pushes Menno over Centerville
CENTERVILLE — Kory Henrichs caught a 13-yard pass from Macon Oplinger as time expired to lift the Menno High School football team to a 26-20 win over Centerville Friday in Centerville.
The win marked the second time in two weeks that Menno scored at the last second to win.

Howard improves to 2-0 with win over Cobras
SIOUX FALLS — The Howard High School football team led 42-0 at halftime and ended up with a 49-16 win over defending 9AA champion Hurley/Marion Friday afternoon in the second game of the Prairie Bowl at Howard Wood Field.
Howard, which improved to 2-0, ran for 459 total yards. Tucker Gassman ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns and Dan Noonan ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Tigers. Zach Torkelson and Ethan Cavigielli each added 85 yards.
