Escaped convict caught in Lyman County

Area law enforcement agencies captured an escaped convict Monday around 7:30 p.m. Lincoln Williams, who walked away May 3 from the state penitentiary in Sioux Falls, is being held in the Brule County Jail pending escape charges being filed by the Lyman County state’s attorney.

Weather spotter training will be offered this week

KENNEBEC — The National Weather Service will offer weather spotter training for emergency management officials and the public at several locations this week during Severe Weather Awareness Week, April 25-29, including at the Kennebec Fire Hall on Wednesday.
“For anyone who attends, we will go over cloud identification, severe storm identification, various structure identification,” said David Hintz, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. “We’ll look at what’s important and what isn’t — what to pay attention to and how to communicate with the weather service.”

Other veteran sheriffs also leaving office

KENNEBEC — Back when Don Manger first started in law enforcement, he used notebooks, batons and carried a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson gun.
A decade into the 21st century, computers, .40-caliber automatic Glocks and Tasers are the tools or weapons of choice.
Manger, 69, who has spent 35 years in law enforcement, is trading his career for the leisure of a fishing pole and an old 1957 Chevy to restore. He was elected Lyman County sheriff in fall 1998.

Lyman Co. clerk office in flux after termination

KENNEBEC — Lyman County residents, law enforcement officials and a prosecutor wanting to do business at the county clerk of court’s office in Kennebec have had difficulty doing so this month. Now they must adjust to a new parttime schedule in which the office is only open two days a week — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays — and as needed. Though clerk of courts offices are in county courthouses, such employees are under the state’s control.

AREA BASKETBALL: Fink scores 1,000th point

TRIPP — Adam Fink scored his 1,000th point in the seventh-ranked Tripp-Delmont/Armour boys’ basketball team’s 68-41 win over Menno Saturday. Fink scored 15 points and dished out nine assists. Jared Hermanek led Tripp-Delmont/Armour (8-1) with 23 points. Tyler Payer added 13 points and eight rebounds and Cody Dozark had 10 points.

Opinion: Wish kids could see the county I remember

We traveled to Presho from Pierre the other evening for the hotly contested Chamberlain Cubs vs. Lyman Raiders girls’ basketball game. The temperature outside was, well, frightful, and Highway 83 had a few small drifts decorating its shoulders. Still, the driving surface was fine, and the visibility — except for the occasional shot of blowing snow just above the roadway — was limited only by the horizon and approaching night.

MOUNT VERNON — Jon Nebelsick had a game-high 21 points to lead Mount Vernon past Avon 60-48 Tuesday. Nebelsick also had 10 of Mount Vernon’s 24 rebounds, while Tim and Cameron Deinert each had 11 points. The Mustangs hit 59 percent of their field goals, 50 percent of their free throws, while Avon hit 40 percent from the field. Avon was led by Luke VanGerpen, who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Josh Cihak had 12 points.

Weekend volleyball roundup: Woonsocket falls in tourney title game

EMERY — Oldham-Ramona/Rutland defeated Woonsocket 2-0 in the championship match of the Bridgewater-Emery tournament Saturday in Emery. Set scores of the championship match were 25-12 and 25-23. Woonsocket’s Shelby Grassel had a team-high 12 kills and added four digs. Emily Olson had five kills, three digs and three aces, Kayla Collins had 12 assists and Alicia Enfield had five assists and three digs. Kimberly Collins had two kills, three digs, an ace and two blocks.

Kennebec’s Jandreau ties for first

Later this week, Dawson Jandreau will make the trek to Gillette, Wyo., to defend his national saddle bronc title at the National High School Finals Rodeo. Jandreau, who recently graduated from Lyman High School and resides in Kennebec, won his first national title at the 2009 NHSFR.
