It’s been a few years since Lance Carson has hosted a reunion in Mitchell for Vietnam War veterans, but he said popular demand convinced him to once again take the reins.
“A bunch of guys got together and cornered me one night,” Carson said. “They said, ‘Boy, we’d like to come back to Mitchell and have another one of those.’ ”
Sen. John Thune said a Wednesday visit with Afghani President Hamid Karzai and other officials has left him more confident about the country’s future and security.
However, the Republican senator from South Dakota said apprehension still remains among Afghani government and military officials about President Obama’s plan to begin withdrawing troops from the region in 18 months.
With all the attention focused lately on the new national memorial for World War II veterans on the National Mall, Americans seem to have forgotten that the Mall still lacks a national memorial for World War I veterans.
U.S. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., is at the forefront of an effort to change that. During a hearing today in Washington, D.C., he will testify on behalf of legislation to rededicate an existing memorial for D.C.’s World War I veterans as the “National and District of Columbia World War I Memorial.”
