No. 8 Tigers try to beat No. 6 USF for the first time in three games today

For the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team, games against the University of Sioux Falls are always big rivalry games. The latest edition of the NAIA poll that came out Monday made today’s game a little bigger. The Tigers, who picked up two big Great Plains Athletic Conference wins — including a 78-64 win over Concordia — moved up one spot to No. 8 in the poll. They started the year No. 4 in the preseason poll but fell to No. 9 after two early losses.

Top-ranked University of Sioux Falls travels to Sioux City, Iowa, today for a Great Plains Athletic Conference showdown. The No. 1 Cougars play No. 4 Morningside College in a battle of two top-ranked, undefeated teams. USF is 10-0 and the Mustangs are 9-0. The winner of the matchup will win the GPAC conference crown and also put themselves in position for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

College football: Playoff berth, top of MVFC up for grabs in Brookings

BROOKINGS — The South Dakota State University football team plays perhaps its biggest game of the season today when it hosts Southern Illinois. The No. 9 Jacks and No. 3 Salukis both enter the game 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The winner will not only take over sole possession of first in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, but it will also secure the league’s automatic berth in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

College football: No. 9 Jacks play Penguins in MVFC game of week

South Dakota State University picked up what could be its biggest win of the season last week by defeating previously No. 6-ranked Northern Iowa in front of a record crowd at the annual Hobo Day game. Today, the Jacks (6-1) travel to Youngstown, Ohio, to play Youngstown State (4-3) at 3 p.m. to try and grab their seventh win of the season.

USF cruises to win over DWU

SIOUX FALLS — The Dakota Wesleyan football team knew it would have to play mistake free Saturday if it wanted to have a chance against the University of Sioux Falls. The Tigers knew they couldn’t give the top-ranked team in the NAIA any extra chances. But two fumbles in DWU’s first three possessions gave the Cougars an early lead and a fast start to a huge first half. USF led 56-0 at halftime and eventually came away with a 59-7 win Saturday at Bob Young Field in Sioux Falls.

The Dakota Wesleyan University and University of Sioux Falls football teams couldn’t be more different right now in terms of their respective seasons. The Tigers are coming off their most disappointing loss of the season — a 33-7 loss to Briar Cliff where they came up with just 27 rushing yards. The Cougars, on the other hand, are on the heels of perhaps their biggest win in recent history. USF beat NCAA Division I rival University of North Dakota 28-13 last week in Grand Forks, N.D.
