In branding himself as an “independent Democrat,” South Dakota governor candidate Scott Heidepriem is acknowledging the growing influence of the state’s independent voters.Heidepriem’s television ads feature the phrase “independent Democrat for governor.” In a visit Tuesday with The Daily Republic’s editorial board at the newspaper office in Mitchell, Heidepriem was asked about his decision to include “independent” in front of his party affiliation.
“The party that’s growing fast is independent,” he said in part.

State’s six governor hopefuls participate in forum, talk about economic ideas
SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota’s six gubernatorial candidates discussed job creation, fiscal responsibility and reduced regulation during an economic development forum Wednesday in Sioux Falls.The forum was part of the annual Governor’s Conference on Economic Development.
Gov. Mike Rounds cannot seek reelection because of term limits, leaving a field of five Republicans and one Democrat vying for the state’s top job.

One of the first television ads in the 2010 gubernatorial race accuses the Rounds administration of increasing state spending by $500 million during the past seven years, but the claim’s validity has been questioned.The ad is for state Sen. Scott Heidepriem, D-Sioux Falls, who is the only Democrat in the governor’s race. The 31-second video, which can be seen on television and the Internet, alludes to Republicans being responsible for the $500 million increase and calls the spending “a monster.”

Poll results: Daugaard widens his lead over Heidepriem
Republican Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard now holds a 17-point lead over Scott Heidepriem, the only Democrat in the race for South Dakota governor.But Heidepriem maintains modest leads over two other GOP hopefuls.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely South Dakota voters, the results of which were released Tuesday, shows Daugaard leading Heidepriem, the state Senate minority leader, 49 percent to 32 percent. Six percent prefer some other candidate, and 13 percent are undecided.

PIERRE — Senate Democratic leader Scott Heidepriem’s plan to impose a 3 percent cap on the annual growth of spending and employment in state government didn’t survive past its first hearing Thursday.The Senate Appropriations Committee scrapped the plan on a 5-1 vote. The committee is one of the Legislature’s two panels whose members oversee the state budget.
