MHS students prepare to compete at event with scenes from ‘Love Letters’
Two Mitchell High School students have proved that not just anyone can perform dual interpretation.Senior Matt Bartl, 17, and sophomore Maddi Miller, 15, recently became the first students at Mitchell to qualify in their category for the National Speech and Debate Tournament June 11-19 in Kansas City, Mo. They will perform scenes from a Broadway play script entitled, “Love Letters,” by A.R. Gurney.

Big second half lifts Kernels past Brookings
BROOKINGS — Normally it’s the first eight minutes of a game or the last eight minutes of a game that determines the outcome.
On Saturday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium, it was the last four minutes of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth quarter that gave Mitchell a 65-56 Eastern South Dakota Conference win over Brookings.

Brookings pulls away with late run
The Mitchell High School girls’ basketball team appeared poised to pick up its first win of the season Saturday night when it cut Brookings’ lead down to two, 52-50, with 2:45 left to play.
That’s when point guard Angela Odegaard took over for the Bobcats, however, using her speed to run the floor and dish the ball inside to teammate Katie Gordon. Gordon scored nine straight points as part of a
9-2 run to help Brookings beat the Kernels 61-52 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game at the Corn Palace.

Kernels open playoffs against No. 1 Aberdeen
A wave of young, inexperienced players was pushed up to the varsity court for Mitchell volleyball early this season.
At times, the Kernels showed their brilliance, playing some of the top teams in the state to nail-biting finishes. Other times, the team would struggle, and the youth would stick out like a sore thumb.

MHS's Temple takes 24th, girls finish 15th
RAPID CITY — Mike Temple’s personal-record time of 17:21.57 helped the Mitchell junior place 24th in the Class AA state cross country meet Saturday in Rapid City, bettering his 55th-place finish from a year ago.
The Mitchell girls, competing for the first time this year as a full team, also finished in 15th place, beating Huron for the second year in a row.

Kernels fall to Aberdeen
One day after falling 3-1 to an 8-10 Huron squad, the Mitchell High School volleyball team gave the top-ranked team in the state all it could handle Saturday afternoon.
But in the end, it was still Aberdeen Central that came out on top 3-0 in the Kernels’ annual “Think Pink” match at Mitchell High School. The Golden Eagles won 25-19, 29-27 and 25-19 in an event that raised $8,000 for the You Will Never Walk Alone Foundation.

Playoff implications abound as Mitchell hosts Huron
The Mitchell High School football team will close the regular season tonight with a chance to build some momentum heading into the playoffs.
The Kernels (1-7) will take on Huron (1-7) at 7 p.m. at Joe Quintal Field with a chance to win for the second time in the last three regular season games.
