Sen. John Thune was able to schedule his victory speech well before the polls closed.Thune, R-S.D., was unopposed for a second term. He held a press conference with South Dakota journalists and at least one national journalist.

Democrats stop in Mitchell, sounding an optimistic note
Heidepriem led a group of Democratic candidates who stopped Monday in Mitchell as part of a two-day “victory tour.”
Heidepriem said he feels all trends point to a win for him, making him the first Democrat to be elected governor in South Dakota since Dick Kneip won the last of three elections in 1974. He and his running mate, Ben Arndt, are running against Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard, the Republican candidate, whose running mate is state Sen. Matt Michels.

Charges unlikely in alleged crimes by state GOP
Prosecution is unlikely for Republican campaign workers who allegedly broke the law by placing campaign material in mailboxes across Madison, according to a postal official contacted by The Daily Republic.The South Dakota Democratic Party announced Sunday that it had lodged a formal complaint with the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General. The party claims that Republican political operatives illegally placed campaign flyers from Kristi Noem, Rich Sattgast and other Republican candidates directly in voters’ mailboxes.
