Just like the previous 28 years, the 29th United Way campaign can officially be recorded as a success.
At an awards and recognition luncheon held Friday at the Ramada Inn in Mitchell, a banner showing $448,790 in funds raised was unfurled in front of a crowd, eliciting applause and a few sighs of relief.
Mitchell United Way is pursuing a last-minute push, through an unusual approach, to get the organization up to its 2009 fundraising goal.
Down by $20,000 and citing a difficult economic atmosphere, the United Way is urging area residents to contribute at a special drive from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace, where either Executive Director Dave Stevens or a board member will accept donations, said Marilyn Wilson, campaign chairwoman.
This year’s campaign to raise money for United Way has gotten off to a slow start.
We find that both disappointing and alarming, considering the wide reach that United Way has in Mitchell and the surrounding area.
A hundred volunteers will fan out this afternoon for Day of Caring, part of the kickoff for Mitchell United Way’s 2009 Campaign.
Area residents will spend time lending a hand at several United Way agencies, ranging from LifeQuest to Salvation Army, Executive Director Dave Stevens said.
