At 5:54 p.m., National Weather Service Doppler Radar continued to indicate a tornado. This tornado was located nine miles south of Mount Vernon or 14 miles southwest of Mitchell, moving southeast at 10 mph.
South Dakota will be one of seven states included this summer in what a federal agency calls “the largest and most ambitious attempt to study tornadoes in history.”
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the massive storm-chasing project, known as Verification of Origin of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment 2 (VORTEX2 or V2), this month. From May 10 to June 13, 50 scientists and 40 research vehicles with 10 mobile radars will collaborate to explore the origins, structure and evolution of tornadoes.
