Tiger men, Bellet set school records at Okoboji

OKOBOJI, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan men’s and women’s golf team each had records set Sunday at the 18-hole Iowa Lakes Spring Invite. The event was hosted by Iowa Lakes Community College at Brooks National in Okoboji, Iowa. The DWU men set a school record for an 18-hole team score, and Dani Bellet broke her own school record for an 18-hole individual score. Shooting a 286 to break the old score by a single stroke, the Tiger men took second place at the meet. Kirkwood Community College shot a 283 for the win. As a team, DWU was 2-over-par. Senior Nick Gates tied for third place with a 1-under-par 70, Tyler Evenson tied for fifth with an even par and Adam Shiffermiller was seventh with a 72. Chris Pritchard shot a 2-over-par 73 for eighth.

Tigers sweep Concordia, Hastings

Dakota Wesleyan’s designated-hitter Collin Hacker hit an RBI triple to the left-center field gap in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie game, helping the Tigers complete a sweep of Hastings College Sunday at Cadwell Park. Hacker’s hit helped the Tigers beat Hastings 4-2 in the second game of the doubleheader, and Phil Johnson’s complete-game win led DWU to a 9-2 victory in the first game. Sunday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference wins over Hastings weren’t the only ones DWU got over the weekend. It also swept another GPAC rival, Concordia, Saturday at home. The four wins in two days improved the Tigers’ record to 25-14 overall and 12-4 in the GPAC, which is third in the conference.

DWU splits with Dana, Doane over weekend

The Dakota Wesleyan softball team went 2-2 over the weekend in four games against Great Plains Athletic Conference rivals. The Tigers split with Dana College Saturday at Cadwell Park and split with Doane College Sunday in Crete, Neb. “I believe both of these teams swept us last year,” Tigers’ coach Marie McCarthy-Foster said. “We definitely played well over the weekend.”

DWU's Anderson's recruiting abroad

While on a weeklong recruiting trip earlier this week to Dakota Wesleyan University, Josh Hope — a native of Hinkley, England — hit his first-ever hole-in-one. The achievement may have helped persuade Hope, as he has since signed with the Tigers and will be part of the men’s golf team next year. Hope, 18, isn’t the first golfer DWU men’s and women’s golf coach Adam Anderson has looked abroad to recruit.

No Elite Eight for DWU: Tigers fall in Sweet 16

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team got over the first-round hump Wednesday at the NAIA national tournament, but now it seems the Tigers have a new hurdle. The second round. The Tigers picked up their first national-tournament win since 1947 Wednesday, but couldn’t get anything going offensively Friday and fell to No. 10 Cornerstone, 64-56 in the Sweet 16 on the College of the Ozarks campus in Point Lookout, Mo.

DWU plays in Sweet 16 today

Wednesday night, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team picked up another first for the year. The Tigers won their first game at the NAIA national tournament since 1947 late Wednesday night when they beat McPherson College (Kan.) 79-66 in the first round of the tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. Dakota Wesleyan had a day off to let the accomplishment soak in, but today it’s back to work.

Fossum takes 13th at nationals

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Dakota Wesleyan junior Derik Fossum tied his personal best and took 13th overall in the triple jump Saturday at the NAIA indoor track and field national championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Fossum, a Canton native, jumped 46-feet-8.75 inches, which matches the distance that won the Great Plains Athletic Conference title last month. The jump is also the second best in school history. The school record in 47-feet-4.75 inches, set in 1974.

Dakota Wesleyan earns No. 7 seed in national tournament

The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team earned the No. 7 seed at the NAIA national tournament, it was announced Wednesday. The Tigers held a selection celebration on the DWU campus Wednesday afternoon to not only learn who they would play and when, but also to celebrate the team’s all-Great Plains Athletic Conference nominees.

Harer leads Wesleyan to nationals

Dakota Wesleyan senior Jordan Harer is going after his second straight All-American season starting today. The 141-pound Harer and three other Tiger wrestlers will be at the NAIA wrestling national championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., which start today and run through Saturday evening.

Tigers' Dorsey wins GPAC player of year

Darrin Dorsey wasn’t getting many scholarship offers after his sophomore season at Bakersfield College, a junior college in Bakersfield, Calif. The Phoenix native had had a good sophomore season, but suffered a foot injury, dropping his scoring average from around 13 points per game to right around nine points per game. More than 1,600 miles away, Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball coach John Hemenway was still trying to fill his roster for the 2009-10 season and the summer was starting to come to a close. He had two scholarship spots open up in early August and was looking for the right fit.

Tigers down Briar Cliff

In 1978, legendary Dakota Wesleyan University basketball coach Gordon Fosness led the Tigers to a record 26-win season. A record that hasn’t been matched since. Until now. DWU, led by coach John Hemenway, tied that record with a 73-55 win over Briar Cliff University in semifinal action of the Great Plains Conference tournament Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Tigers wrap up GPAC regular season with win over Hastings

A few days ago, it seemed the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team’s game against Hastings College Saturday would decide the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season champion. A hard-fought win for the Tigers and an upset loss for Hastings, however, sealed the title for DWU a few days ahead of schedule, eliminating the pressure and the implications Saturday afternoon.

DWU women give No. 1 Hastings a scare, lose 57-46

After a 102-49 loss to No. 3 Northwestern College Wednesday night, Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball coach Aaron Kahl wasn’t sure how his team would respond Saturday against top-ranked Hastings. But thanks to some senior leadership, the Tigers hung with Hastings throughout the entire game. Turnovers and free throws down the stretch ultimately doomed Dakota Wesleyan, which fell 57-46 in their final regular- season game. Hastings, which is 27-3 overall and 17-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, is third in the league in scoring with an average 79 points per game.
