Other View: Budget specifics should be made public much earlier
State lawmakers knew they would face a difficult task this session putting together a budget. The state is facing a $36 million budget shortfall for the 2011 fiscal year. Gov. Mike Rounds said last week that South Dakota can’t expect a last-minute reprieve in the form of a federal stimulus check like the state received last year.

Other View: Natural gas could put dent in U.S. emissions
In America’s climate debate, one of the most promising developments of recent months has been the growing recognition in Washington that natural gas may play a key role in curbing carbon emissions. The resurgence of gas comes through the discovery of massive deposits in Appalachian shale formations and elsewhere — a reserve that offers the prospect of stable domestic supplies and relatively low prices. Since burning natural gas produces half the emissions of burning coal, switching the two fuels could put a significant dent in America’s carbon footprint.

Other View: Toyota must get to work to ensure safety
“I don’t think they can ever sell another product under that name,” the media expert said. “There may be an advertising person who thinks he can solve this, and if they find him, I want to hire him because then I want him to turn our water cooler into a wine cooler.” A quote from a recent story about the troubles at Toyota? No. But Toyota should learn the story of the quote because it’ll help the company mightily as it recovers from safety scares and gigantic recalls. The quote dates from 1982. Its author was advertising guru Jerry Della Femina. And its subject was Tylenol, Johnson & Johnson’s famed pain reliever.

Other View: D.C. should have shot at Winter Olympics
A few years back, Washington and Baltimore mounted a bid to host the Olympics and struck out bigtime. Now we know what the problem was: They were bidding for the Summer Games. With Vancouver struggling to truck in enough snow for the Winter Games, set to begin on Friday, there’s an obvious solution. Move the Games here.

Other View: Stay with budget commission proposal
The failure of the U.S. Senate to back a special commission suggests the will to tackle the nation’s budget deficit has been derailed by special interests on the left and right. The commission won a bipartisan Senate majority on Tuesday (53-46), but needed 60 votes to pass. Thirty-six Democrats were joined by 16 Republicans and an independent in the majority.

Other View: Shade of red in a blue state
No matter how Democrats spin it, the loss of Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat to a relatively unknown Republican state senator is a political setback of historic proportions. Massachusetts voters gave Scott Brown 51 percent of the vote over Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley. Brown’s win was especially convincing in the bluest of blue states because only a few weeks ago Coakley had a 30-point lead in the polls.

Other View: No security system can be perfect
The young Nigerian who attempted to blow up a Northwest flight bound for Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day should not have been allowed to board the plane. That’s the common wisdom among Monday morning quarterbacks and other pundits. They are right, of course, but the facts of the incident confirm it’s easier said than done.

Other View: Time for UND to retire Sioux logo
The dismissal of a frivolous lawsuit now clears the way for the State Board of Higher Education to put a dignified and decisive end to the University of North Dakota’s “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo. District Judge Michael Sturdevant came to the only conclusion possible under North Dakota law: The decision over the controversial nickname and logo rests solely with the higher education board.

Other View: Lawmakers lack nerve on Wyo. deaths

Just stand aside and wring their hands.

In a rush to prove that the $787 billion federal economic stimulus package is working to create or save jobs, the Obama administration may have done irreparable harm to its credibility.

Other View: House’s health-care bill won’t be final one
Anyone who believes the health care reform bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives will be the final word on reform should see the doctor. Depending on one’s bias, the bill is a “good start” or “a disaster.” Take your pick. It won’t matter at this point.

The South Dakota Democratic Party’s governing members have decided to open their 2010 primary elections to participation by voters who are registered as independents. Should the South Dakota Republican Party do the same?

Other View: Politicians can talk, but voters hold power to cut spending
Politicians can exclaim it is time for government to rein in spending all they want, but nothing is going to happen until voters decide they no longer want government handouts.

Other View: Fight H1N1 with common sense
The government cannot protect us against all hazards — and the H1N1 virus is one of them. Private sector health care providers, along with prudent safeguards by individuals and families, are much more effective than the government against disease.

Other View: Sanford, MeritCare partnership is a good fit
Not everyone in Fargo is cheering the completion of the merger of Fargo’s MeritCare and Sanford Health of Sioux Falls. Doubts about the wisdom of the merger still linger among a few prominent Fargo residents. They believe that despite assurances from managers of both health systems, the ultimate result will be job losses in Fargo and second-place status for the former MeritCare.
