Thune plan pushes for jet fuel of future
If Sen. John Thune’s plans work out, the B-1B bombers taking off from Ellsworth Air Force Base will be propelled by wood waste and crop-based fuel sooner than you might think possible.

Opinion: S.D. delegation pushes for new bomber
South Dakota’s congressional delegation has formed a united front in pushing the U.S. Air Force to develop a new, “next generation” bomber in an effort to boost the future of Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. They are fighting an uphill battle.

Thune calls on Obama to listen to U.S. generals
With the White House reviewing troop levels and the military strategy in Afghanistan, members of Congress have had their attention diverted from the intense and tiring debate over health care reform.

McGovern, Abourezk draw GOP criticism on goodwill tour
Few South Dakotans are thinking much about the election that will be consuming us a year from now. But two former members of Congress are trying to change that.

Senators not waiting for EPA on ethanol rule
It’s been a wild week in the world of ethanol. The gasoline additive has been blamed for stalling out dozens of Baltimore police cars, while rare good news came out of the developing industry. And on Capitol Hill, a place as important to the biofuels business as any cornfield, Midwest senators and the EPA fought a battle to a draw.

Herseth Sandlin backs obscure plan
Long before Sen. Max Baucus unveiled his health care bill this past week, South Dakota’s House member signed onto a bill that’s gotten a lot less attention and which carries a lot less fiscal heft. After low start-up costs, the bill would cost the federal government nothing.

Herseth Sandlin tackles vets' issues
While we’re all hearing a great deal about health care reform and quite a bit about cap-and-trade proposals now before Congress, other less glamorous work continues on Capitol Hill.
For Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, D-S.D., a majority of legislation she’s helming seeks to improve veteran benefits.

Thune says Bush administration misled him on asset relief program
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., doesn’t yet have an opponent for his 2010 re-election campaign, but he does have a message.
“Stop the bailouts,” read the ads running on newspaper Web sites and at least one blog.

Cap-and-trade becoming a political fight, too
Beyond the raucous health care debate, the debate over cap-and-trade — or climate change, depending on your political leanings — involves rising decibel levels. South Dakota’s congressional delegation spans the spectrum on this bill designed to drop the U.S.’s greenhouse gas emissions. A bill was passed by the House and awaits action in the Senate.

Opinion: Senator: Health care ‘status quo just isn’t working’
Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., has long believed in the need for health care reform. But only after he asked South Dakotans to tell their stories this year did he his thinking on the issue fully develop. Those stories convinced Johnson of the need for a Medicare-like public insurance plan to compete with plans from for-profit companies.

Thune fighting, also promoting health care reform
Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., must feel slightly confused these days. As one of the U.S. Senate’s top Republicans, it’s part of his job description to rhetorically whip Democratic plans for health care reform.
He did so a week ago when he delivered the Republicans’ national radio address and described a potential boondoggle.

Herseth Sandlin can't support House bill - yet
If you’re having trouble keeping track of the debate over health care reform, keep an eye on South Dakota Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
That should be easy, as in the past week no story updating events on Capitol Hill is complete without noting the activities of the U.S. House’s coalition of Blue Dog Democrats.

Opinion: Other offices are still on table for Herseth Sandlin
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin’s decision earlier this month will shape South Dakota politics for years to come. She will run for re-election to the U.S. House, not for governor. She believes this is what would be best, both for her infant son and for South Dakota. The Democrat answered a few of my questions about her decision-making process.

S.D. senator to run GOP's 'think tank'
Think of it as the think tank for Republicans in the Senate. That’s how Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., describes his new job.
Shortly before the July 4 holiday, Thune’s fellow Republican senators elected him chairman of the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee. For Thune, it is a promotion from the Senate’s No. 5 GOP leadership job — vice chairman of the Senate’s Republican Conference, which he’d held since November — to the No. 4 post. The promotion comes in the wake of Nevada Sen. John Ensign publicly admitting an extramarital affair.

Opinion: S.D. senator a lonely voice on a critical issue
If you’ve ever marveled at how America’s congressmen seem more strident in their partisan views than the public at large, you are in the company of Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.
