The state Department of Labor just came out with its unemployment numbers for January, and the news is bad. Mitchell's unemployment rate shot back up to 5.8 percent, from 5 percent in December.

North Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate among states in January, at 3.3 percent. It has benefited from an oil and gas boom. Nebraska had the second lowest at 3.8 percent, followed by South Dakota at 4.4 percent.
PIERRE — The panel that keeps an eye on the financial health of South Dakota’s unemployment insurance system decided Monday that the recently troubled program should be allowed to continue accumulating money from business owners, until its balance of available funds reaches a target of $76 million.
The new program will require all people who get unemployment benefits for more than 10 weeks to seek assistance from a local Labor Department office. Department staff will help people evaluate their job skills, identify careers that are in demand, find training programs and direct them to appropriate job openings.
