PIERRE — A bill that would allow school districts to arm teachers and other personnel with guns was approved Tuesday by the South Dakota House after supporters said it could make would-be attackers think twice about entering a school building.
PIERRE — South Dakota often sets the bar low in determining whether teaching candidates have sufficient knowledge of the content they need in the classroom, according to a study presented Monday to the South Dakota Board of Education.
The local school board and teachers’ union reached a tentative agreement Monday that will cost the district about $285,000 more next year, or $570,000 over the life of the two-year contract. Mitchell Education Association chief negotiator Curtis Smith said the agreement must be approved by the MEA membership. About half the district’s 200 teachers are MEA members, he said.
