Withdrawal from water district sent to voters in Hutch. Co.

OLIVET — Hutchinson County voters will decide Tuesday whether the county should withdraw from the James River Water Development District.
Two county residents say they believe the water district’s mission has changed from developing irrigation. When that failed, the emphasis shifted to alleviating the impact of flooding on landowners in the basin — an effort that Elmer Bietz, of Tripp, calls a hopeless dream.

Engineer says Highway 18 work will be finished soon

State Highway 18 west of Olivet should be open by mid-October, according to a state highway engineer.
The section of Highway 18 from Highway 25 to the west edge of town has been closed since May for a bridge replacement at Lone Tree Creek, about a half-mile west of Olivet.

Hutchinson office cited for errors

OLIVET — An audit report by the state of South Dakota shows that attempts by the Hutchinson County Auditor’s office to correct a missed 2008 tax levy not only failed to fix the problem but created more headaches for the county.
As was reported last week, the county failed in 2008 to levy Hutchinson taxpayers in the Freeman School District for $79,238 to help pay off bonds for the new Freeman Elementary School. The Hutchinson County commissioners in December 2009 approved a $79,238 payment from the county general fund to cover the school district’s shortfall.

Van Gerpen won't run for re-election

TYNDALL — State Rep. Bill Van Gerpen, R-Tyndall, announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election this year. Van Gerpen said he has served eight years as a state representative, but he is not term-limited because the eight years were not consecutive. Still, he feels stepping aside is the right thing to do.
