BROOKINGS — Trailing by one headed into the second period, the Mitchell Marlins boys’ varsity hockey team gave up three goals to Huron in the second and third periods at the state tournament Saturday.
The Marlins’ 8-3 loss to Huron in the consolation semifinal game knocked Mitchell out of the state tournament.
BROOKINGS — The Mitchell Marlins were defeated 5-1 in the opening round of the boys’ varsity state hockey tournament Friday.
Mitchell goalie Weston Gauger made 34 saves on 39 shots on goal. The Marlins made 16 shots on goal in the game.
HURON — The Mitchell Marlins were in a familiar position.
For the second straight day at the girls’ varsity state hockey tournament, they needed three third-period goals in hopes to send the game to overtime.
Saturday, the Marlins trailed 4-1 headed into the third against Huron in the semifinals and rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory.
Sunday, the Sioux Falls Flyers held the Marlins scoreless in the third period to capture the state championship 4-1 at the Bergman Arena in Huron.
Tigers drop doubleheader to Dickinson State

MINNEAPOLIS — The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team was swept by Dickinson State in a nonconference doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
The Mitchell Marlins PeeWee A hockey team lost a pair of one-goal games over the weekend at the state hockey tournament, which was held at the Mitchell Activities Center.
Mitchell lost to Sioux Falls West 6-5 in three overtimes Saturday and fell to Aberdeen 1-0 Sunday to earn eighth place in the 11-team field.
