BOSTON — Vampire movies and TV shows are the rage nowadays — perhaps because their heroes are attractive, tormented and misunderstood, which is how many young viewers see themselves. But the original Dracula was not quite so attractive. In fact, he was the very model of a thug.
I married a fine person. For a long while I thought if I outlived her — which seems doubtful — there would be consolation in being able to say, “This is the only unkind thing she ever did.”
That was before Monday evening, when she treated me so shabbily I’m still trying to come to grips with it.
We were just two frightened young people in an old house.
You see, it was the noises downstairs that scared Ann and me. We were in my room in the rambling, dark, two-story, wooden house when she first heard it.
Sunday brings the day of ghosts and goblins, candy gorging and all-out youthful fun known as Halloween.
But over the years, a holiday that used to be full of tricks and treats, fun and spooks has been partly turned into a day of worry by parents for their kids’ safety.
