SHARON, N.D. — Veteran rancher Keith Johnson has lived through droughts, blizzards and long stretches of poor prices.
That makes him appreciate this winter even more. Beef prices have soared to record highs, reaching levels he describes as “unimaginable, the highest we’ve seen in our lifetime.”
Community-supported agriculture programs, or CSAs, traditionally offer a weekly box of seasonal produce from a local farm. Customers pay upfront so the farmer has the cash on hand to buy seeds and equipment, and a guide for what and how much to grow.
WASHINGTON — Farm net income probably will fall 6.5 percent in 2012 from last year’s record as the biggest crop acreage in a generation and rising costs trim profits, the Department of Agriculture said.
