Christensen named DWU women’s head coach PressPass

To say Dakota Wesleyan’s newest head women’s basketball coach has ties to the area might be an understatement. Friday afternoon, the university announced it had hired Jason Christensen to take over the women’s basketball program. Christensen is not only a Mitchell native and Dakota Wesleyan alum, he also coached high school girls’ basketball in Mount Vernon for nine years and, most recently, spent two years coaching high school boys’ basketball in Wagner.

DWU hopes to have men’s coach hired by next week PressPass

Dakota Wesleyan University filled one vacant coaching position Friday afternoon and is close to filling another. The university announced Friday that Jason Christensen, who has coached high school basketball in the area for 11 years, will take over the women’s program. He is the 12th head coach in the program’s 35-year history.

Changes made to DWU soccer camp PressPass

Due to a conflict with the Mitchell School district’s schedule because of school cancellations this winter, the Dakota Wesleyan University soccer programs have announced a change to their camp schedule for the Youth Day Camp in Mitchell. The camp was originally scheduled to run from May 24-27, but will now instead run from May 25-28.

Tigers' relay team takes first PressPass

HASTINGS, Neb. — The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s 4X100-meter relay team took first place at Saturday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference track and field championships. The group of Steph Leist, Alyssa Christianson, Tamik Irvin and Natalie Wipf ran a time of 47.63 seconds, which was .17 seconds faster than Nebraska Wesleyan.

Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament field set PressPass

The Mount Marty baseball team claimed the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season championship Saturday after sweeping Dakota Wesleyan University and will be the No. 1 seed going into Thursday’s conference tournament. The Lancers — who will play No. 8 Concordia in the first round — received an automatic bid to the NAIA World Series by finishing the conference in first place with a 20-4 record.

Seven inducted into DWU Athletic HOF PressPass

Seven inducted into DWU Athletic HOF Saturday night was about telling stories, reliving big-game moments and catching up with old friends at the Sherman Center. Seven individuals were inducted into the Dakota Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame in a banquet at the Sherman Center on the DWU campus. There were stories told that brought on laughter and some that brought on tears, but one recurring theme was the Wesleyan tradition of excellence.

Tigers fall to Nebraska Wesleyan PressPass

Tigers fall to Nebraska Wesleyan The Dakota Wesleyan softball team entered Sunday’s doubleheader with Nebraska Wesleyan in need of a sweep in order to move up in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings and, hopefully, secure a spot in the postseason tournament. The Tigers had opportunities to win both games, but an extra-inning rally by the Prairie Wolves in Game 1 and several defensive miscues by DWU in the second game cost the Tigers the doubleheader. Nebraska Wesleyan won 4-1 and 4-2.

Tiger men, Bellet set school records at Okoboji PressPass

OKOBOJI, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan men’s and women’s golf team each had records set Sunday at the 18-hole Iowa Lakes Spring Invite. The event was hosted by Iowa Lakes Community College at Brooks National in Okoboji, Iowa. The DWU men set a school record for an 18-hole team score, and Dani Bellet broke her own school record for an 18-hole individual score. Shooting a 286 to break the old score by a single stroke, the Tiger men took second place at the meet. Kirkwood Community College shot a 283 for the win. As a team, DWU was 2-over-par. Senior Nick Gates tied for third place with a 1-under-par 70, Tyler Evenson tied for fifth with an even par and Adam Shiffermiller was seventh with a 72. Chris Pritchard shot a 2-over-par 73 for eighth.

Tigers sweep Concordia, Hastings PressPass

Tigers sweep Concordia, Hastings Dakota Wesleyan’s designated-hitter Collin Hacker hit an RBI triple to the left-center field gap in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie game, helping the Tigers complete a sweep of Hastings College Sunday at Cadwell Park. Hacker’s hit helped the Tigers beat Hastings 4-2 in the second game of the doubleheader, and Phil Johnson’s complete-game win led DWU to a 9-2 victory in the first game. Sunday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference wins over Hastings weren’t the only ones DWU got over the weekend. It also swept another GPAC rival, Concordia, Saturday at home. The four wins in two days improved the Tigers’ record to 25-14 overall and 12-4 in the GPAC, which is third in the conference.

DWU splits with Dana, Doane over weekend The Dakota Wesleyan softball team went 2-2 over the weekend in four games against Great Plains Athletic Conference rivals. The Tigers split with Dana College Saturday at Cadwell Park and split with Doane College Sunday in Crete, Neb. “I believe both of these teams swept us last year,” Tigers’ coach Marie McCarthy-Foster said. “We definitely played well over the weekend.”

DWU's Anderson's recruiting abroad PressPass

While on a weeklong recruiting trip earlier this week to Dakota Wesleyan University, Josh Hope — a native of Hinkley, England — hit his first-ever hole-in-one. The achievement may have helped persuade Hope, as he has since signed with the Tigers and will be part of the men’s golf team next year. Hope, 18, isn’t the first golfer DWU men’s and women’s golf coach Adam Anderson has looked abroad to recruit.
