No Elite Eight for DWU: Tigers fall in Sweet 16 POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team got over the first-round hump Wednesday at the NAIA national tournament, but now it seems the Tigers have a new hurdle. The second round. The Tigers picked up their first national-tournament win since 1947 Wednesday, but couldn’t get anything going offensively Friday and fell to No. 10 Cornerstone, 64-56 in the Sweet 16 on the College of the Ozarks campus in Point Lookout, Mo.

DWU plays in Sweet 16 today

DWU plays in Sweet 16 today Wednesday night, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team picked up another first for the year. The Tigers won their first game at the NAIA national tournament since 1947 late Wednesday night when they beat McPherson College (Kan.) 79-66 in the first round of the tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. Dakota Wesleyan had a day off to let the accomplishment soak in, but today it’s back to work.

Fossum takes 13th at nationals PressPass

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Dakota Wesleyan junior Derik Fossum tied his personal best and took 13th overall in the triple jump Saturday at the NAIA indoor track and field national championships in Johnson City, Tenn. Fossum, a Canton native, jumped 46-feet-8.75 inches, which matches the distance that won the Great Plains Athletic Conference title last month. The jump is also the second best in school history. The school record in 47-feet-4.75 inches, set in 1974.

Dakota Wesleyan earns No. 7 seed in national tournament PressPass

The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team earned the No. 7 seed at the NAIA national tournament, it was announced Wednesday. The Tigers held a selection celebration on the DWU campus Wednesday afternoon to not only learn who they would play and when, but also to celebrate the team’s all-Great Plains Athletic Conference nominees.

Harer leads Wesleyan to nationals Dakota Wesleyan senior Jordan Harer is going after his second straight All-American season starting today. The 141-pound Harer and three other Tiger wrestlers will be at the NAIA wrestling national championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., which start today and run through Saturday evening.

Tigers' Dorsey wins GPAC player of year Darrin Dorsey wasn’t getting many scholarship offers after his sophomore season at Bakersfield College, a junior college in Bakersfield, Calif. The Phoenix native had had a good sophomore season, but suffered a foot injury, dropping his scoring average from around 13 points per game to right around nine points per game. More than 1,600 miles away, Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball coach John Hemenway was still trying to fill his roster for the 2009-10 season and the summer was starting to come to a close. He had two scholarship spots open up in early August and was looking for the right fit.

Tigers down Briar Cliff In 1978, legendary Dakota Wesleyan University basketball coach Gordon Fosness led the Tigers to a record 26-win season. A record that hasn’t been matched since. Until now. DWU, led by coach John Hemenway, tied that record with a 73-55 win over Briar Cliff University in semifinal action of the Great Plains Conference tournament Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Tigers wrap up GPAC regular season with win over Hastings A few days ago, it seemed the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team’s game against Hastings College Saturday would decide the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season champion. A hard-fought win for the Tigers and an upset loss for Hastings, however, sealed the title for DWU a few days ahead of schedule, eliminating the pressure and the implications Saturday afternoon.

DWU women give No. 1 Hastings a scare, lose 57-46 After a 102-49 loss to No. 3 Northwestern College Wednesday night, Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball coach Aaron Kahl wasn’t sure how his team would respond Saturday against top-ranked Hastings. But thanks to some senior leadership, the Tigers hung with Hastings throughout the entire game. Turnovers and free throws down the stretch ultimately doomed Dakota Wesleyan, which fell 57-46 in their final regular- season game. Hastings, which is 27-3 overall and 17-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, is third in the league in scoring with an average 79 points per game.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — After suffering a loss to Hastings Saturday, the Northwestern women’s basketball team cruised past Dakota Wesleyan 102-49 Wednesday. With the win, the No. 4-ranked Red Raiders moved to 14-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, while the Tigers are 4-13 in the conference. “They’re a good team no matter when you play them,” DWU coach Aaron Kahl said. “They moved the ball really well and shot it really well.”

Tigers edge Red Raiders, win GPAC PressPass

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball team claimed its first-ever Great Plains Athletic Conference championship with a win over Northwestern College coupled with a Hastings loss Wednesday night. The Tigers trailed by as much as 11 points and rallied back numerous times in the second half to edge the Red Raiders 88-86 in Orange City, Iowa. “We’ve got veteran kids in our program and a lot of guys who have been here for a while,” Tigers’ coach John Hemenway said. “I’m really happy for our kids, the coaches and happy for Dakota Wesleyan.

Broughton honored with GPAC award PressPass

Broughton honored with GPAC award Last season, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team played its entire schedule without its All-American forward. Preston Broughton had to have several knee surgeries before the season even started and didn’t see a single minute of playing time the entire season. At the start of the 2009-10 season, DWU coach John Hemenway said Broughton was “pretty close to where he left off.” Now, during perhaps the most crucial point of the Tigers’ Great Plains Athletic Conference schedule, Broughton has clearly surpassed where he left off.

Tigers' Harer gets win No. 100 PressPass

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Dakota Wesleyan’s Jordan Harer got his career 100th win Saturday at the Briar Cliff Open in Sioux City, Iowa. The Gettysburg native and 141-pounder picked up a pin in the second period in his first match of the day for win No. 99, and then he hit the century mark with an 8-1 decision over Aaron Ely of Dana College. “I just congratulated him and he said thanks, and that was about it,” Tigers’ coach Matt Sedivy said.
