Kernels take on R.C. Central Thursday at Class AA state tourney Mitchell boys’ basketball coach Gary Munsen knows how to get his team to the state tournament. Including this season, 32 times in 37 years under the direction of Munsen, the Kernels have made the state tournament. That’s an 86-percent success rate.

Parent group: Keep budget cuts equal

Gymnastics should be treated similar to other sports in that those involved shouldn’t have to pay for everything entirely by fundraising, a parent group said Monday. In a third meeting of Superintendent Joe Graves and a group made up of parents involved with the high school gymnastics program, the group identified several budget cuts that would save the program money, and Graves proposed that the gymnasts and parents pay for the remainder of the budget — around $16,000.

Young named first team all-ESD

Mitchell freshman Kerri Young was named to the first team all-Eastern South Dakota conference list, it was announced today. Young was the only freshman on the 10-player team. Young’s teammate Kristin Sabers, also a freshman, was honorable mention.

MHS beats Sturgis 74-58 in state play-in game STURGIS — Mitchell can thank a second-half adjustment for its trip to the state tournament. The Kernels pulled away from Sturgis in the third quarter of a close game behind a stifling zone, winning 74-58 in the Region 2AA playoffs Tuesday night at Sturgis Brown High School gymnasium.

Gymnastics parents, Graves meet with ideas PressPass

An alternate practice location could help not only reduce the cost of the Mitchell High School gymnastics program, but also increase the number of participants, a parent group told school administrators Monday. The group, made up of parents involved in the high school gymnastics program, met with Superintendent Joe Graves Monday for the second time since Graves announced his plan to eliminate gymnastics as a high school-sanctioned sport and replace it with competitive cheer and dance. Monday’s meeting focused on ideas that would make the program more cost-effective per participant as well as increase the number of girls participating in the sport.

MHS plays Sturgis today for state berth PressPass

When Mitchell and Sturgis met up Feb. 6 at the Corn Palace, the Scoopers played much of the game without their best player. Junior Seth Bachand, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, led Sturgis with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Kernels’ 56-49 win that night, despite sitting out much of the second half with three fouls.

Kernels' bid for state comes up just short PressPass

Kernels' bid for state comes up just short RAPID CITY — The Mitchell High School girls’ basketball team made a lot of steps in the right direction this season. The Kernels won nine games — the most since the 2003-04 season — and made it out of the the district tournament for the first time in several years. MHS was a game away from its first state berth since 2004, but came up against another team looking to end a state-tournament drought and just couldn’t make that final step. The Kernels lost 58-48 to Rapid City Stevens Saturday in the Region 2AA playoffs in Rapid City.

Kernels beat Pierre 49-43, advance to Region 2AA state play-in game Two late offensive rebounds may have saved the Mitchell boys’ basketball team’s season. The fourth-quarter boards turned into points, helping the Kernels hold their lead over Pierre and keep their season alive for at least one more game. Mitchell defeated Pierre 49-43 in a District 3AA elimination game Friday at the Corn Palace.

One more win and the season-long goal will be fulfilled for the Mitchell girls’ basketball team. In a Region 2AA game with Rapid City Stevens at 6 p.m. MST today at Stevens High School, a state-tournament appearance is on the line. The winner goes to next weekend’s state tournament in Huron and the loser’s season ends.

Years of two and done in district play haunted the four-year starter, as the Mitchell girls’ basketball team hadn’t won a postseason game for what seemed like forever. Piper and the Mitchell girls’ basketball team finally got it. The Kernels won. They won a playoff game.

Eagles beat Kernels in 3AA district game ABERDEEN — Mitchell’s game plan was to slow down Aberdeen Central’s leading scorers Jared Hannigan and David Westby. Those two were held to a combined 17 points, but other Golden Eagle players, Wil Carlson, Blake Stevenson and Corey Casanova, picked away at the special defense. The Golden Eagles beat Mitchell for the third time this season in a 67-56 first-round District 3AA high school boys’ basketball game on Tuesday at Golden Eagles Arena.

Late turnovers cost Kernels in 63-56 loss HURON — Missed opportunities and a lack of rebounding cost the Mitchell girls’ basketball team its biggest win in six years Monday at the Huron Arena. The Kernels — who this year have won more games than the past six seasons combined — had numerous chances to pull off the District 3AA upset. Courtney Miller’s two free throws with less than five minutes left in the game gave Mitchell a one-point lead, but turnovers and the Tigers’ second-chance points put the game away.

Gymnastics parents meet with Graves PressPass

Less than a week after Mitchell Superintendent Joe Graves announced a plan to eliminate the school district’s gymnastics program, a group of parents met with Graves and athletic director Geoff Gross to share their concerns. The parents met with Graves Monday morning and listened as he went more in depth into the reasoning behind his proposal. The parents also presented concerns of their own.

Havlik wins title in OT; Kernels take eighth RAPID CITY — Brent Havlik was calm as he sat in the stands watching the championship matches leading up to his bout at 160 pounds. He was calm as he took the mat against West Central’s Tim Weber, who also entered the match undefeated. Havlik was calm when he got down early in the state championship match and calm when it went into overtime. The Mitchell sophomore didn’t panic in overtime, but he didn’t waste any time, either.
