No. 14 Jacks play No. 3 Oklahoma at 8:30 p.m. Sunday After earning its second-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team learned Monday it will play Oklahoma in the opening round at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Norman, Okla. The 14th-seeded Jackrabbits are 22-10 overall after winning the Summit League Conference tournament on March 9.

Nearly five minutes ticked off the clock before she even attempted a shot in Monday’s women’s Summit League tournament semifinal. But with two nothing-but-net free throws with 15:12 left in the first half, the McCook Central graduate became the 29th member of the Jackrabbits’ 1,000-point club.

With a trip to the NCAA tournament on the line, the two teams meet again in the conference tournament championship at 3 p.m. today at Sioux Falls Arena. South Dakota State swimmer Katie Budahl continued her record-setting season last weekend when she, along with her teammates, competed at the Summit League championships Feb. 18-20 in Indianapolis. Budahl, a senior and Mitchell native, won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races, setting Summit League records in both events. She also broke her own records set at SDSU.

Jacks overcome slow start to run past longtime rival USD 67-48 BROOKINGS — It was apparent driving up to Frost Arena that Monday night’s renewal of the South Dakota State and University of South Dakota rivalry was going to be charged with emotion. Long lines of students were standing out in the cold and blowing snow waiting to get inside. On one end of Frost Arena the line was made up of SDSU students who were convinced the Jackrabbits would rout the Coyotes. At the other end a somewhat shorter line of USD students who made the trip from Vermillion hoping to see an upset.

South Dakota State University swimmer Katie Budahl continued her strong senior campaign over the weekend at the Minnesota Challenge, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Budahl, a former Gopher swimmer, took first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.24; more than three seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Budahl, a Mitchell native, is undefeated in that event on the year with nine wins in as many races.
