McCook Central/Montrose rolls past Parkston

PARKSTON — The McCook Central/Montrose boys’ basketball team led 36-19 after the first half and never looked back in a 67-33 rout of Parkston Monday night. Mark Holz led the Fighting Cougars with 12 points. Jay Holz and Shane Gottlob each had 10. Gottlob also had six rebounds and six assists. McCook Central/Montrose was 27-of-68 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line.

Hot Springs beats Wagner for ‘B’ dual title

WAGNER — The Wagner High School wrestling team entered Saturday’s Class B dual wrestling tournament as the tournament’s three-time defending champion and looking to add a fourth title to its resume. The Red Raiders won their first three matches of the day, but ran into a solid Hot Springs team in the championship match and lost 38-22.

MARION — Hanson High School led by three at halftime, but outscored Menno 10-4 in the third quarter to pull away for an eventual 49-36 win Saturday on the final day of the Cornbelt Conference girls’ basketball tournament in Marion.

Wagner to host ‘B’ duals

Five of the top-10 ranked teams in Class B wrestling will be in attendance at today’s South Dakota Class B dual championships. Defending Class B state champion and No. 1-ranked Wagner will host the 12-team tournament in its high school gymnasium.

MOUNT VERNON — Kris Menning scored 20 points to lead Corsica/Stickney to a 62-59 overtime win over Mount Vernon to stay perfect on the season at 9-0 Thursday in a high school boys’ basketball game in Mount Vernon. Luke Bamberg added 13 points and grabbed six of the team’s 21 rebounds and teammate Kirbey Baan Hofman chipped in 12 points. Corsica/Stickney shot 19-of-37 from the field and 14-of-16 from the line.

Area basketball: Brecke scores 30, Wagner beats Winner

WINNER — Devon Brecke led all scorers with 30 points as Wagner edged Winner 56-52 in a high school girls’ basketball game Tuesday in Winner. Jessa Doom added 12 points and Jilanne Doom nabbed five of the team’s 18 rebounds. Wagner shot 17-of-40 from the field and a nearly perfect 17-of-18 from the line.

Wagner cruises past No. 3 Winner

WINNER — Matt Fleming led Wagner with 24 points Thursday in a 69-51 victory over No. 3 Winner in a high school boys’ basketball game in Winner. Trevor Greger scored 20 points, nabbed 22 of the team’s 34 rebounds and had five assists in the win for the Red Raiders, who were receiving votes in this week’s Class A poll. Tait Johannsen pitched in 11 points as Wagner shot 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Area basketball: Nighthawks defeat Cavaliers

TRIPP — Tyler Payer scored a game-high 18 points to lead Tripp-Delmont/Armour to a 58-53 win over Bon Homme Tuesday in a high school boys’ basketball game in Tripp. Adam Fink added 16 points and Jared Hermanek pulled down 10 rebounds and had six assists for TDA. The Nighthawks were 23-for-43 from the field, 8-for-15 from the line and had 24 rebounds.

Eagles cruise to victory

ABERDEEN — The Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team improved to 8-1 on the season Saturday with a 63-32 win over Aberdeen Christian. Matt Nielsen had a game-high 18 points and Jesse Tolma and Cody Thomsen each had 15 points. Tolsma also added 10 rebounds and 11 assists. The Eagles were 26-of-44 from the field, 6-of-12 from the line and had 23 rebounds. For Aberdeen Christian, Austin Wollman had 12 points. The Eagles, whose only loss came from Corsica/Stickney play next Tuesday against Avon.

Area basketball: Gross leads Hanson as Beavers edge Mount Vernon

HANSON — The Hanson High School boys’ basketball protected the ball, winning the turnover battle 7-17 in a 57-55 victory over Mount Vernon. Andrew Gross scored 18 points and teammate Pierce Smith garnered 15 points and five assists. Trevor Doyle finished with 11 points and 11 of the team’s 27 rebounds. Hanson was 20-of-43 from the field and 15-of-26 from the line.

Graesser scores 1,000th point in Cowgirls’ win over Jones Co.

COLOME — Alisyn Graesser scored 15 points, including the 1,000th of her career, helping Colome beat Jones County 43-33 Tuesday night in a high school girls’ basketball game in Colome. Collene Cahoy added nine rebounds for the Cowgirls, who won despite shooting only 14-for-52 (27 percent) from the field. Colome hit 14 of 23 free throws and had a 32-20 advantage in rebounding.

Hanson routs Parkston

PARKSTON — The Hanson boys’ basketball team shot a red-hot 52 percent from the field Monday in a 62-29 win over Parkston. Pierce Smith led all scorers with 15 points, while Trevor Doyle had 11 points and seven rebounds and Andrew Gross had 10 points. Hanson was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and won the rebounding battle, 27-20. For Parkston, Chance Roth had seven points and Lucas Holden had six. Tanner Weber led the team with four rebounds. The Trojans were 12-of-40 from the field, 3-of-10 from the line and had 27 turnovers. Hanson — which won the JV game — is 5-1 and plays Mount Vernon Friday in Alexandria, while Parkston is searching for its first win. The Trojans play Freeman today in Parkston.

Mount Vernon edges Avon

AVON — Mount Vernon improved to 2-4 as it edged Avon 38-37 Tuesday in a high school boys’ basketball game in Avon. Avon led 18-10 at halftime and held Mount Vernon to a single second-quarter point, but the score was tied at 24 after the third quarter and the Mustangs were able to hold off the Pirates.
