Canton holds seven-point edge over Wagner; Kimball/White Lake in fourth 
SIOUX FALLS — For the second straight year, the Wagner wrestling team is in second place after the first round of the Class B state wrestling tournament, which was Friday at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The Red Raiders, who are trying for their third consecutive state championship, have 65 points and are trailing Canton by seven points.
Seven of Wagner’s nine state qualifiers are still alive, including six who will be in today’s semifinal round.

MENNO — Freeman outscored Scotland 29-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 69-53 win in the District 11B title game Friday in a girls’ basketball game in Menno.

Area basketball: Kiotes edge White Lake in District 10B action
Kimball overcame a 3-point barrage in the fourth quarter to hold off White Lake 61-58 and again a berth in the District 10B championship Tuesday in high school girls’ basketball action at the Corn Palace.
White Lake netted seven 3-pointers in the final quarter.

Five of Lyman’s six senior wrestlers headed to Class B state meet
PRESHO — Six Lyman seniors occupied the small wrestling room Friday in Presho, one day before the regional tournament.
After the district round, the Raiders still had all of their seniors alive, each hoping to advance through regions for one last go-round at the Class B state wrestling tournament.

Wagner wins Region 3B title; Howard takes second in 2B
WAGNER — The Wagner wrestling team will send nine to the Class B state wrestling meet Friday in Sioux Falls.
The Red Raiders won the Region 3B wrestling meet Saturday in its home gymnasium, racking up 165 points.
Kimball/White Lake took second with 116 points, Burke/Gregory finished third with 109, Bon Homme came in fourth with 107.5 and Lyman finished in fifth with 89 points.

Area basketball: Buzzer-beater lifts Winner over Black Panthers
PLATTE — Winner’s Zach Horstman hit a 15-foot jumper as time expired to lead the Warriors past Platte-Geddes Tuesday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.
Winner defeated the Black Panthers 43-41.

Area basketball: Chamberlain beats Red Raiders, 57-53
CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain handed Wagner its third loss of the season Friday when it beat the Red Raiders 57-53 in high school boys’ basketball action Friday in Chamberlain.
Chevy Fischer led Chamberlain with 16 points. Mike Schwartz added 11 points and Isiah Harrison had 11 points and seven rebounds.

ALEXANDRIA —Mitchell Christian picked up its second big win of the week Thursday when it defeated Hanson 54-31 in high school boys’ basketball action in Alexandria.
Cody Thomsen scored 18 points to lead Mitchell Christian, ranked No. 3 in this week’s Class B poll, and Jesse Tolsma scored 12 points and also had 11 rebounds and five assists.

McCook Central/Montrose rolls past Parkston
PARKSTON — The McCook Central/Montrose boys’ basketball team led 36-19 after the first half and never looked back in a 67-33 rout of Parkston Monday night.
Mark Holz led the Fighting Cougars with 12 points. Jay Holz and Shane Gottlob each had 10.
Gottlob also had six rebounds and six assists.
McCook Central/Montrose was 27-of-68 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line.

Hot Springs beats Wagner for ‘B’ dual title
WAGNER — The Wagner High School wrestling team entered Saturday’s Class B dual wrestling tournament as the tournament’s three-time defending champion and looking to add a fourth title to its resume.
The Red Raiders won their first three matches of the day, but ran into a solid Hot Springs team in the championship match and lost 38-22.

Area basketball: Jaguars edge Mount Vernon in overtime
MOUNT VERNON — Kris Menning scored 20 points to lead Corsica/Stickney to a 62-59 overtime win over Mount Vernon to stay perfect on the season at 9-0 Thursday in a high school boys’ basketball game in Mount Vernon.
Luke Bamberg added 13 points and grabbed six of the team’s 21 rebounds and teammate Kirbey Baan Hofman chipped in 12 points. Corsica/Stickney shot 19-of-37 from the field and 14-of-16 from the line.
