Storms uproot trees, damage buildings in area
A Letcher farmer lost five grain bins and Letcher residents lost power Monday night when strong storms blew through the area, bringing along heavy rain and high winds.That damage occurred on Jim Edwards’ farm southwest of Letcher, said Ernie Anderson, Sanborn County chief deputy and emergency management director.
“The big grain bins were rolled up like a pop can,” he said.

Chester rolls past White Lake/Plankinton

Disappointed with council’s decision
To the Editor:
I was at last night’s (Aug. 17) budget hearing at City Hall, representing the Dakota Discovery Museum, of which I am president of the board of directors.
To say I am disappointed at the council’s decision to not fund Cornerstones, the Dakota Discovery Museum and the Prehistoric Indian Village is understating my concerns.

Schmitz wins junior event at Lakeview 
Mitchell’s JP Schmitz won the boys’ 16-18 age division at an Avera/Austad Junior Golf Tour event Tuesday at Lakeview Golf Course.
Schmitz shot a 71 to take the top spot a stroke clear of Brookings’ Chris Holmquist. Brandon’s John Grothe took third with a 73.

Moody looking to get back to NFR, top of world rankings 
Last year was the first time in three years that the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo got under way without Jill Moody.
The Letcher resident isn’t planning on that being the case when the NFR rolls around this December.

Three area cowboys will compete at the College National Finals Rodeo, which starts Sunday in Casper, Wyo.
Artesian’s Blake Baade, Letcher’s Tyrell Moody and Dalton Kelly-Richter, a student at Mitchell Technical Institute, will all compete at the week-long rodeo.
