Danforth, Juhnke, Schaefer win area legislative primaries 
Political newcomer Perry Danforth beat former legislator Ron Volesky in the District 22 state Senate Democratic primary Tuesday.
In District 21, state Rep. Kent Juhnke and political newcomer James Schaefer finished first and second in their state House race and will advance to the general election.

Only area legislative primary is in Dist. 21 
Only one of the legislative districts in The Daily Republic’s coverage area will have a primary Tuesday. In some cases, there won’t even be races this fall.
The coverage area includes legislative districts 8, 19, 20, 21, 25 and 26B, which cover all or parts of Davison, Sanborn, Miner, McCook, Hanson, Hutchinson, Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Douglas, Aurora, Jerauld, Buffalo, Brule, Gregory, Tripp, Lyman and Jones counties.

Close race may mean recount in Springfield 
A recount could decide the fate of two close city council races in Springfield.Voters in the Bon Homme County city cast ballots Tuesday for mayor and two council seats.
In Ward 1, incumbent Brian Jones beat Greg Stockholm by two votes, 59-57. Greg Walpole won the Ward 3 race by four votes, 55 -51, against Bruce Waage.

Elections scheduled Tuesday 
Area residents will cast their ballots in various city, town board and school board races Tuesday.Voters in Carthage, Menno, Spencer, Tripp and Winner will decide the fate of contested mayoral or town-board-president races.
Winner School District voters will choose among six candidates for three seats. Incumbents Tom Covey and Marsha Risseeuw face opposition from Jason Bartels, Carrie Ishmael, Brenda Jorgensen and Scott Meiners.

Wagner wins Region 3B title; Howard takes second in 2B

Wagner cruises to 5B title 
SCOTLAND — The Wagner wrestling team cruised to its third straight District 5B championship Saturday in Scotland.
The Red Raiders finished with 220 points, which was better than second-place Bon Homme’s 153 and third-place Parkston’s 145.5. Andes Central/Corsica/Platte-Geddes came in fourth with 95 points, Mount Vernon/Plankinton as fifth with 58 and Scotland had 35 points.
Wagner had seven first-place wrestlers and 13 place in the top three.
David Kocer (112), Austin Soukup (125), Alex Kocer (130), Derek Dickerson (135) and Mitch Breen (140) each won district titles. Teammates Robert Kokesh (160) and Steven Holzbauer (171) also won district championships.
Bon Homme had four first-place wrestlers, including Lincoln Stoebner (103), Jay Kriz (119), Nathan Kloucek (145) and 152-pound champion Joey Sykora. The Cavaliers had 11 wrestlers place in the top four.
ACCPG claimed two weight classes en route to the fourth-place finish. Tim Medicine Horn won the heavyweight bracket and Myles VanVuuren won at 189 pounds.
Parkston’s Eric Reiff (215) won his bracket and the Trojans had 13 wrestlers finish in the top four.

Eagles cruise to victory 
ABERDEEN — The Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team improved to 8-1 on the season Saturday with a 63-32 win over Aberdeen Christian.
Matt Nielsen had a game-high 18 points and Jesse Tolma and Cody Thomsen each had 15 points. Tolsma also added 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Eagles were 26-of-44 from the field, 6-of-12 from the line and had 23 rebounds.
For Aberdeen Christian, Austin Wollman had 12 points.
The Eagles, whose only loss came from Corsica/Stickney play next Tuesday against Avon.

Area basketball: Gross leads Hanson as Beavers edge Mount Vernon 
HANSON — The Hanson High School boys’ basketball protected the ball, winning the turnover battle 7-17 in a 57-55 victory over Mount Vernon.
Andrew Gross scored 18 points and teammate Pierce Smith garnered 15 points and five assists. Trevor Doyle finished with 11 points and 11 of the team’s 27 rebounds. Hanson was 20-of-43 from the field and 15-of-26 from the line.
