Wagner had two athletes on the Southeast South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball first team, it was announced recently. Sophomore Devon Brecke and senior Jilanne Doom both earned first-team status. Area basketball: Pirates edge Menno for District 11B title 
FREEMAN — Avon grabbed an early lead over Menno and held on for a 40-38 win Thursday in the District 11B championship game in Menno.
Avon, which led 12-10 after the first quarter, plays the winner of Corsica/Stickney and Tripp-Delmont/Armour in the Region 6B championship game Tuesday at the Corn Palace.

MENNO — Freeman outscored Scotland 29-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 69-53 win in the District 11B title game Friday in a girls’ basketball game in Menno.

Red Raiders trying for three-peat 
Wagner’s Robert Kokesh and Alex Kocer will both be going for the same goal that their team is trying for today.
After winning the state championship by a wide margin in 2008 and edging Redfield last year by one-half point, the Wagner wrestling team, along with Kokesh and Kocer, are all going for a three-peat.
The Class B state wrestling tournament starts at 10 a.m. today at the Sioux Falls Arena.

Wagner cruises to 5B title 
SCOTLAND — The Wagner wrestling team cruised to its third straight District 5B championship Saturday in Scotland.
The Red Raiders finished with 220 points, which was better than second-place Bon Homme’s 153 and third-place Parkston’s 145.5. Andes Central/Corsica/Platte-Geddes came in fourth with 95 points, Mount Vernon/Plankinton as fifth with 58 and Scotland had 35 points.
Wagner had seven first-place wrestlers and 13 place in the top three.
David Kocer (112), Austin Soukup (125), Alex Kocer (130), Derek Dickerson (135) and Mitch Breen (140) each won district titles. Teammates Robert Kokesh (160) and Steven Holzbauer (171) also won district championships.
Bon Homme had four first-place wrestlers, including Lincoln Stoebner (103), Jay Kriz (119), Nathan Kloucek (145) and 152-pound champion Joey Sykora. The Cavaliers had 11 wrestlers place in the top four.
ACCPG claimed two weight classes en route to the fourth-place finish. Tim Medicine Horn won the heavyweight bracket and Myles VanVuuren won at 189 pounds.
Parkston’s Eric Reiff (215) won his bracket and the Trojans had 13 wrestlers finish in the top four.

Eagles fall to Hawks 
The Canistota girls’ basketball team defeated Mitchell Christian 41-36 Saturday at the Corn Palace.
Chloe Nielsen had 15 points for Canistota and Haley Jerman and Victoria Albers each had eight.
No team stats were reported for the Hawks.
For Mitchell Christian, Mariah Nelson had 16 points and eight rebounds. Mackenzie Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and five assists and Alexa Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists.
The Eagles had 23 rebounds and 12 assists.
MCHS is 4-13 and hosts Stickney/Mount Vernon today, while Canistota is 9-8 and hosts Freeman Academy Tuesday.
