Area legislative hopeful tours massive district on a bicycle FORT THOMPSON — A state senator in central South Dakota took a novel approach to campaigning for re-election this week — from the seat of his bicycle.
Cooper Garnos, R-Presho, began his journey through the expansive District 21 on Monday, riding from Murdo to Presho. The ride continued with trips from Presho to Chamberlain on Tuesday, Chamberlain to Gann Valley on Wednesday, Gann Valley to Platte on Thursday, and Platte to Wagner on Friday. District 21 is made up of Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, Brule and Charles Mix counties.

Colorado man tries for tribe’s support of proposed wind deal FORT THOMPSON — The founder and president of a wind-energy company fielded questions Thursday from members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe in Fort Thompson on a deal that could have more than 200 turbines up and running by 2012.
Paul X. McMenaman, president of Winterhawk Energy and Development Corp., of Evergreen, Colo., spoke to approximately 25 tribal members about the plan that he said would likely bring 222 wind turbines to the reservation and provide the tribe with approximately $4 million in revenue annually.

Chamberlain board pledges to work with parents following T-shirt incident PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — A Chamberlain School Board official assured members of The Coalition for Cultural Equality Monday night that the board will work with them on a proposed resolution to create cultural standards in the district.
Chairwoman Susie Knippling of Gann Valley said the board might need to tweak some wording before the resolution could be approved on two more readings.

Attempt arises to nix funds for study on Missouri River PressPass

The head of the Missouri River Association of States and Tribes hopes a letter composed by Missouri lawmakers urging Congress to halt funding for a study about the Missouri River will not affect the project.
“We think there’s sufficient support, and some key people are backing the study,” said David Pope, the association’s executive director. “I think there’s a very strong chance that it will be funded this year, but you never know until Congress acts for sure.”

Ousted tribal leader questions legitimacy of election PressPass

FORT THOMPSON — Two men who faced off in a battle to become chairman of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe are expressing different opinions about the legitimacy of the election.
Chairman Brandon Sazue Sr., 36, was defeated by former chairman Duane Big Eagle Sr., 60, on April 15 in a race decided by 11 votes. Sazue received 343 votes to Big Eagle’s 354.

Through the decades, ideas and leaders have come and gone, and the crime and poverty on many reservations has persisted. Still, a mix of about 150 state, federal and tribal officials gathered Thursday to plan and hope for a better future.
