MINNEAPOLIS — The Ethan sixth-grade girls’ basketball team took third place in the Great Four-State Championship basketball tournament Sunday, Aug. 15.

Ethan's towering achievement
A new water tower will serve Ethan area residents this fall through a joint project between the town and Hanson Rural Water System.
A 200,000-gallon water tower is being erected just west of the current water tower south of Highway 42. The town will receive half of that capacity, said Dan Schroeder, Hanson Rural Water manager.

Hanson, Avon clash in Week 2 of 2010 football schedule
The Avon football team will get its chance at redemption when it plays Hanson at the Beavers’ new stadium in the second week of the regular season this fall.
That is one of the highlighted area matchups on the high school football schedule for the year. The football schedules were recently posted on the South Dakota High School Association’s website.

Two local standouts sign with Tiger women
The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball program is without a head coach, but was still able to secure five more commitments for the 2010-11 season, the university announced Thursday afternoon.
The university also said it hopes to have a new head coach in place “very soon.”

Ethan squad reuniting today
Fifty years ago, Chamberlain beat Ethan in the Region 6 championship game at the Corn Palace to earn a trip to the high school boys’ state basketball tournament.
Dan McBrayer remembers that game for many reasons.
For one, it was a one-point game. Chuck Yates hit a pair of free throws late in the game to give Chamberlain a 47-46 edge over the Rustlers.
For another, it would have been Ethan’s first trip to state since 1951.

Mathis honored in Dimock
DIMOCK — If you ask Ruby Mathis, it isn’t hard to understand why the Ethan Teeners baseball team is dedicating its first-ever season to her late son, Terry.
“He loved all sports,” Ruby Mathis said Wednesday evening after the opening ceremonies of Ethan’s inaugural home game at Dimock Field. “But (Terry) also loved children. And not just for the things they did in school, but anything they did outside of it.”

Koupal repeats as pole vault champ

Wagner boys, girls looking for top-eight finishes in Class A
John Tyler has a goal for his Wagner track and field team this weekend at the Class A state meet.
“Our goal is to be in the top 8 for the boys,” Tyler said. “Obviously, the higher the better; but if we can be in the top eight, that would be something that hasn’t been accomplished in Wagner in some time.”
