Mad Dogs fall in regular-season finale PressPass

Mad Dogs fall in regular-season finale Harry Decker threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Pierre Rattlers past the Mitchell Mad Dogs 5-0 in a non-league amateur baseball game Sunday night at Cadwell Park. Brett Young took the loss after tossing seven innings and allowing five runs for the Mad Dogs. Josh DeJong and Cade Hearnen each had two hits to lead the Mitchell offense. Billy Hamilton added a triple. The loss marked the end of the regular season for the Mad Dogs, who will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Brookings to play for the right to advance to the Class A state amateur tournament.

Little county has big impact PressPass

CORSICA — No small county in four states can top what Douglas County residents can do in raising money to fight cancer.
Last year, Douglas County Relay for Life raised $56,895 and received an award for ranking first per capita for a population of less than 9,999 in the American Cancer Society’s Midwest Division. The division is made up of South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In the same per capita category nationally, the county was fifth.

Mudcats earn No. 1 seed in District 5B PressPass

Mudcats earn No. 1 seed  in District 5B Up until 12 days ago, the Parkston Mudcats were undefeated in the Sunshine League and the odds-on favorite to run through the 2010 South Dakota Amateur Baseball Association District 5B tournament. But that was then. After the Mudcats came to Mitchell and beat the Mad Dogs 8-5 on July 8 to move to 15-0 in league play, they dropped their final two league games — against Mount Vernon and Dimock/Emery. And the recent vulnerability of the league’s top team has made this week’s District 5B tournament a much more interesting one to watch.

Aurora officials shorten opt-out time for 5 years PressPass

Aurora County commissioners chose to shorten the length of their $400,000 annual opt-out of the state property tax freeze from 10 to five years Tuesday. County Auditor Susan Urban said commissioners cited that many school districts choose five years for an opt-out term as part of the reason for the change.

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria will face the winner of a game between Colton and Tabor/Scotland in the Region 4B Legion baseball tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Alexandria. Colton will face Tabor/Scotland in the loser’s bracket championship prior to the championship game Wednesday. Alexandria will advance to the state tournament with a win. But since the tournament is a six-team, double-elimination format, if Alexandria loses Wednesday there will be a winner-take-all championship game either Thursday or Friday.

Officials at Herseth Sandlin forum talk of cooperative efforts CORSICA — Douglas County is like many of its neighbors — facing flood damage to roads in the six figures.
Emergency Manager Neal Moad said the county has $337,409 worth of damage to roads, with $208,152 in damage for townships alone.
Moad also cited problems with water through large smaller ones downstream. “The availability of funds for reimbursement is the main problem that I see,” he said. “(It’s) our townships that we’re worried about.”
