Last year, Freeman needed a last-second shot from Hillary Paulson to secure a berth in the Class B state tournament — a first for the girls’ basketball program in Freeman.
This time around, the Flyers (19-4) gave themselves some breathing room long before the final seconds of the game and a buzzer-beater wasn’t necessary.

TDA tops No. 1 Jaguars
Less than three weeks ago, the Tripp-Delmont/Armour boys’ basketball team got its shot at undefeated and top-ranked Corsica/Stickney.
That night, Feb. 16, the Jaguars kept rolling along with a 42-36 win. But Nighthawks coach Burnell Glanzer saw something late in that contest that gave him an optimistic outlook in the event the two teams met again.
“We played with them the whole game,” Glanzer said. “In fact, I thought we had them for the most of it, but we just wore down and we didn’t get enough rest for our key guys.”

Corsica/Stickney scored at least 20 points in all but the final quarter Monday in its 88-46 win over Andes Central in the semifinals of the District 12B boys’ basketball tournament at the Corn Palace.

Corsica defeats Andes Central 54-42 for District 12B title
Fourth quarter free-throw shooting and solid defensive play powered Corsica to a 54-42 District 12B girls’ basketball championship win over Andes Central Friday at the Corn Palace.
The Comets managed only two fourth-quarter field goals, but were 13-of-18 from the free-throw line to seal the win.

Area basketball: Kiotes edge White Lake in District 10B action
Kimball overcame a 3-point barrage in the fourth quarter to hold off White Lake 61-58 and again a berth in the District 10B championship Tuesday in high school girls’ basketball action at the Corn Palace.
White Lake netted seven 3-pointers in the final quarter.

Wagner wins Region 3B title; Howard takes second in 2B
WAGNER — The Wagner wrestling team will send nine to the Class B state wrestling meet Friday in Sioux Falls.
The Red Raiders won the Region 3B wrestling meet Saturday in its home gymnasium, racking up 165 points.
Kimball/White Lake took second with 116 points, Burke/Gregory finished third with 109, Bon Homme came in fourth with 107.5 and Lyman finished in fifth with 89 points.

Area basketball: Parkston edges Freeman, 56-52
FREEMAN — Parkston held off Freeman 17-13 in the final quarter to net a 56-52 win in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday in Freeman.
Marie Malloy led Parkston with 19 points and five steals. Emma Murtha grabbed nine of the team’s 35 rebounds and Alison Fergen had five assists. Erica Herrold and McKenzie Weidenbach added nine and eight points respectively. The Trojans were 32 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Jaguars hold off Hanson for 38-31 win
Hanson led at halftime, but Corsica/Stickney outscored the Beavers 24-12 in the second half to pull away for a 38-31 win in high school boys’ basketball action Thursday at the Corn Palace.
Hanson led 19-14 at halftime and the Jaguars held a one-point, 29-28 edge after the third quarter, but outscored the Beavers 9-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Area basketball: Buzzer-beater lifts Winner over Black Panthers
PLATTE — Winner’s Zach Horstman hit a 15-foot jumper as time expired to lead the Warriors past Platte-Geddes Tuesday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.
Winner defeated the Black Panthers 43-41.

No. 1 Corsica/Stickney cruises past No. 2 White River
Besides one small run White River put together in the fourth quarter, the No. 1-ranked Corsica/Stickney boys’ basketball team cruised past the No. 2 Tigers Saturday at the first-ever Dakota Wesleyan Classic.
The Jaguars got 23 points from Kris Menning and held White River to 25 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 65-50 win at the Corn Palace.

Area basketball: Chamberlain beats Red Raiders, 57-53
CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain handed Wagner its third loss of the season Friday when it beat the Red Raiders 57-53 in high school boys’ basketball action Friday in Chamberlain.
Chevy Fischer led Chamberlain with 16 points. Mike Schwartz added 11 points and Isiah Harrison had 11 points and seven rebounds.
