SIOUX FALLS — The Winner-Colome amateur baseball team didn’t get the start it needed Saturday. A seven-run fifth inning changed that. Winner-Colome advanced to the second round of the Class B state amateur baseball tournament by beating Bryant 17-7 Saturday.

Legion all-stars split doubleheader PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — The North team took the first game, but the South fought back to win the second game in a split of an all-star Legion baseball doubleheader Monday in Chamberlain. The North All-Stars won the first game 8-7 and the South took the second game 11-0. The North’s Cody Heumiller, of Howard/Salem, had a double, an RBI and a run in the first game. His team trailed 5-3 after the first inning, but scored five runs in the sixth to take a late lead.

Canova looking to repeat After a three-decade hiatus from the top of the state amateur baseball mountain, the Canova Gang won the Class B state amateur baseball tournament last summer at Cadwell Park. But just taking a peek at the bracket for this summer’s state tournament makes Dave Gassman cringe. “Our bracket is full of good teams this year,” said Gassman, who coached the Gang to a 25-4 record this season, including the District 4B championship. “We’re hopeful that we can do well, but we have a tough row to hoe as we look at the pairings. But we did last year, too.” The tournament, which is single-elimination, begins today and the championship game will be played Sunday, Aug. 15, at Sioux Falls Stadium, commonly known as The Bird Cage.

Tyndall, Mount Vernon win at state tourney PressPass

FLANDREAU — Tyndall and Mount Vernon were both winners in first-round play of the Class B 13- and-14-year-old VFW state baseball tournament Friday in Flandreau. Tyndall beat Big Stone/Ortonville (Minn.) 14-0 in five innings, while Mount Vernon beat Colome 6-5 in eight innings. In other first-round action, Garretson beat Platte 5-1 and Flandreau beat Clear Lake 6-2. Austin Caul allowed two hits in four innings to pick up the win for Tyndall. Jordan Heina had three doubles and single, while Mike Messman doubled and singled to lead the Tyndall offense. Nick Miller picked up the win for Mount Vernon after throwing one inning in relief of Deric Denning, who allowed five runs on three hits in the first seven innings. Cane McBryer took the loss for Colome, which got a triple and a single from Terrance Kinzer to lead its offense. Cody Qualm took the loss for Platte. Cole Heller had a double and a single to lead Platte’s bats. Alexandria to play in Region 4B title game PressPass

ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria will face the winner of a game between Colton and Tabor/Scotland in the Region 4B Legion baseball tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Alexandria. Colton will face Tabor/Scotland in the loser’s bracket championship prior to the championship game Wednesday. Alexandria will advance to the state tournament with a win. But since the tournament is a six-team, double-elimination format, if Alexandria loses Wednesday there will be a winner-take-all championship game either Thursday or Friday.

The Avon football team will get its chance at redemption when it plays Hanson at the Beavers’ new stadium in the second week of the regular season this fall. Platte-Geddes Legion team wins one, loses three over weekend PressPass

The Platte-Geddes Legion baseball team played four games late last week. The team started with a 14-2, five-inning loss to Winner/Colome Thursday in Winner. Josh Wagner gave up 12 runs on seven hits in two innings and took the loss. John Rehak threw five innings and struck out seven to earn the win. Tommy Holleman and Wagner each tripled to lead P-G at the plate. Ethan Vobr had three hits for Winner/Colome.

Colome cleans up, assesses damage following hailstorm COLOME — Residents of Colome are waiting for insurance adjustors and cleaning up the town after Saturday’s storm dropped baseballsized hail and around 5 inches of rain, resulting in broken windows, flooded streets and downed trees.
Tripp County Deputy Sheriff Travis Schwandt said 71 pieces of plywood were tacked over windows Saturday night alone, and the damage assessment is ongoing. A lot of the immediate cleanup effort was done by Colome’s volunteer fire department.

Winner boys, girls win Region 7A titles PressPass

WINNER — The Winner boys’ and girls’ track and field teams each claimed Region 7A titles Thursday in Winner. The girls racked up 205.5 points, which was better than Platte-Geddes’ 173 in second. South Central took third. On the boys’ side, the Warriors finished with 231 points and Platte-Geddes took second with 185.
