Area basketball: Parkston edges Freeman, 56-52 FREEMAN — Parkston held off Freeman 17-13 in the final quarter to net a 56-52 win in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday in Freeman. Marie Malloy led Parkston with 19 points and five steals. Emma Murtha grabbed nine of the team’s 35 rebounds and Alison Fergen had five assists. Erica Herrold and McKenzie Weidenbach added nine and eight points respectively. The Trojans were 32 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Area town plans for performing arts center PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — A new performing arts/events center in Chamberlain is progressing, with a committee of city and school officials recommending a firm to design the structure.
Puetz Corporation, of Mitchell, was considered for hire by the city council and school board Tuesday night at their respective meetings. The city and Chamberlain School District are working together to bring the project to fruition. The project is the result of trying to determine the fate of the old City Hall building on Main Street.

The Canistota girls’ basketball team defeated Mitchell Christian 41-36 Saturday at the Corn Palace. Chloe Nielsen had 15 points for Canistota and Haley Jerman and Victoria Albers each had eight. No team stats were reported for the Hawks. For Mitchell Christian, Mariah Nelson had 16 points and eight rebounds. Mackenzie Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and five assists and Alexa Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists. Chevy Fischer led Chamberlain with 16 points. Mike Schwartz added 11 points and Isiah Harrison had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Potential wind projects outlined PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — The turnout might have been small for a hearing on the proposed Prairie Winds project, but area residents’ words gave weight toward each potential site.
Western Area Power Administration, in Lakewood, Colo., conducted a public hearing on the draft environmental impact statement for the project, which would build 101 wind turbines at either Crow Lake or south of Winner. The hearing occurred at Cozard Memorial Library, Chamberlain.

CHAMBERLAIN — Winner led by six, 19-13, at halftime, but outscored Chamberlain 34-10 in the second half to pull way for a 53-23 win Saturday in Chamberlain. Sharee Galbraith led all scorers with 15 points for Winner and she also had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Warriors were 16-for-45 from the field, 17-for-25 from the line and had 28 rebounds. Frankie Willard had seven points and Jaymee Knippling had eight rebounds to lead the Cubs, who were 7-for-32 from the field, 8-for-13 from the line and had 29 rebounds.

Through the decades, ideas and leaders have come and gone, and the crime and poverty on many reservations has persisted. Still, a mix of about 150 state, federal and tribal officials gathered Thursday to plan and hope for a better future.

He finished with a triple-double 27 points, 10 steals and 14 rebounds in the Spartans’ 73-37 win over Iroquois Tuesday. Mitch Kraft added 19 points for Springs and Mark Gran had 10 points.
