Over-38 state tournament in Canova to kick off PressPass

CANOVA — The fourth annual over-38 state baseball tournament starts today in Canova. Eight teams from across the state play in Canova today through Sunday. In the tournament, players must be 38 or older, be a resident of South Dakota or on a South Dakota amateur baseball roster and use only wood bats.

Area town produces quilts for soldiers Tanya White starting quilting when her husband, an active member in the South Dakota Army National Guard, was deployed to Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004. She never thought the hobby would grow to affect so many people. White began making prayer quilts in September 2008 after a friend from the United Church of Canistota asked her to make one for her son.

Broken arm doesn’t hinder Marion 800, 1,600 relays SIOUX FALLS — A bright pink cast on Kylie Hughes’ fractured left arm didn’t hurt the Marion girls’ relay team at the state track and field meet in Sioux Falls Saturday one bit. Hughes, a freshman who sustained the injury after falling in the 300-meter hurdles of the Region 4B meet, was the second leg on both of the winning Class B girls’ 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Wessington Springs boys hoping for top-three finish at Class B meet It wasn’t so much frustrating but more surprising that the Wessington Springs boys’ track and field team came within one point of eighth place at last year’s Class B state meet, coach Becky Bell-Krueger said. The Spartans — guided by a set of twins — finished in ninth place with 30 points last year in Rapid City, which was one point less than eighth-place Stickney. Wessington Springs went home with two individual-event titles, but no team trophy.

Mitch Kraft stormed out to grab first place, and his twin brother, Drew Kraft, finished the Class B boys’ 3,200-meter relay well in front of the pack Friday at the 86th annual Dakota Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Area basketball: Knights earn first-ever state tourney berth FORT PIERRE — Stickney/Mount Vernon outscored Little Wound 20-6 in the second quarter to pull away for an eventual 58-49 win Friday in the Region 7A girls’ basketball title game in Fort Pierre. The win sealed a trip to the state tournament for Stickney/Mount Vernon and marks the first-ever trip to state for the co-op.
