Area basketball: Knights earn first-ever state tourney berth FORT PIERRE — Stickney/Mount Vernon outscored Little Wound 20-6 in the second quarter to pull away for an eventual 58-49 win Friday in the Region 7A girls’ basketball title game in Fort Pierre. The win sealed a trip to the state tournament for Stickney/Mount Vernon and marks the first-ever trip to state for the co-op.

Area basketball: Kiotes edge White Lake in District 10B action Kimball overcame a 3-point barrage in the fourth quarter to hold off White Lake 61-58 and again a berth in the District 10B championship Tuesday in high school girls’ basketball action at the Corn Palace. White Lake netted seven 3-pointers in the final quarter.

Area basketball: Parkston edges Freeman, 56-52 FREEMAN — Parkston held off Freeman 17-13 in the final quarter to net a 56-52 win in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday in Freeman. Marie Malloy led Parkston with 19 points and five steals. Emma Murtha grabbed nine of the team’s 35 rebounds and Alison Fergen had five assists. Erica Herrold and McKenzie Weidenbach added nine and eight points respectively. The Trojans were 32 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Jaguars hold off Hanson for 38-31 win Hanson led at halftime, but Corsica/Stickney outscored the Beavers 24-12 in the second half to pull away for a 38-31 win in high school boys’ basketball action Thursday at the Corn Palace. Hanson led 19-14 at halftime and the Jaguars held a one-point, 29-28 edge after the third quarter, but outscored the Beavers 9-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Eagles fall to Hawks PressPass

The Canistota girls’ basketball team defeated Mitchell Christian 41-36 Saturday at the Corn Palace. Chloe Nielsen had 15 points for Canistota and Haley Jerman and Victoria Albers each had eight. No team stats were reported for the Hawks. For Mitchell Christian, Mariah Nelson had 16 points and eight rebounds. Mackenzie Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and five assists and Alexa Van Laecken had eight points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists. The Eagles had 23 rebounds and 12 assists. MCHS is 4-13 and hosts Stickney/Mount Vernon today, while Canistota is 9-8 and hosts Freeman Academy Tuesday. Canistota 12 23 31 41 MCHS 18 22 32 36

No. 3 Golden Eagles edge No. 6 Viborg Trailing by nine late in the third quarter, Jesse Tolsma and the Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team didn’t panic. Tolsma scored six points during an Eagles’ 8-2 run to end the quarter, and No. 3 MCHS rallied in the fourth to take a lead and hold on for a 50-45 win over No. 6 Viborg Saturday at the Dakota Wesleyan University Classic at the Corn Palace.

Area basketball: No. 3 MCHS downs Hanson, 54-31 ALEXANDRIA —Mitchell Christian picked up its second big win of the week Thursday when it defeated Hanson 54-31 in high school boys’ basketball action in Alexandria. Cody Thomsen scored 18 points to lead Mitchell Christian, ranked No. 3 in this week’s Class B poll, and Jesse Tolsma scored 12 points and also had 11 rebounds and five assists.

Jill Jandreau scored 12 points to lead Kimball and Katie Talbott had 12 rebounds. The Kiotes were 9-for-14 from the line.

Galbraith, Winner down Chamberlain PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — Winner led by six, 19-13, at halftime, but outscored Chamberlain 34-10 in the second half to pull way for a 53-23 win Saturday in Chamberlain. Sharee Galbraith led all scorers with 15 points for Winner and she also had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Warriors were 16-for-45 from the field, 17-for-25 from the line and had 28 rebounds. Frankie Willard had seven points and Jaymee Knippling had eight rebounds to lead the Cubs, who were 7-for-32 from the field, 8-for-13 from the line and had 29 rebounds.

PLANKINTON — Becca Glanzer went 15-of-18 from the free-throw line to help the Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team to a 55-38 Custer Battlefield Highway Conference win Thursday night. Glanzer hit one basket and finished with 17 points. Mackenzie Van Laecken added 15 points for the Golden Eagles and Alexa Van Laecken had 14 points and eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 20-of-30 from the line while Plankinton went 5-of-16.

Kopfmann records triple-double in win WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Caleb Kopfmann had quite a night for Wessington Springs. He finished with a triple-double 27 points, 10 steals and 14 rebounds in the Spartans’ 73-37 win over Iroquois Tuesday. Mitch Kraft added 19 points for Springs and Mark Gran had 10 points. The Spartans (6-9) outrebounded Iroquois 39-55. Iroquois had 33 turnovers to Springs’ 13. The Spartans won the JV game 41-26. Springs is host to Wolsey-Wessington Tuesday night.
