FREEMAN — Avon grabbed an early lead over Menno and held on for a 40-38 win Thursday in the District 11B championship game in Menno. Avon, which led 12-10 after the first quarter, plays the winner of Corsica/Stickney and Tripp-Delmont/Armour in the Region 6B championship game Tuesday at the Corn Palace.

Area basketball: Gregory beats Platte-Geddes, 53-46 PLATTE — Gregory had three players in double digits for a 53-46 victory over Platte-Geddes in the District 13A semifinals. Aaron Schmitz led Gregory with 17 points and Nate Schmitz added 15 points. Adam Mikkelsen tallied a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Gorillas finished with 32 rebounds, shot 18-of-41 from the field and 13-of-15 from the line.

Two face minor injuries in alcohol-related crash PressPass

AVON — An alcohol-related accident shortly before noon Saturday resulted in one arrest, two people taken to the hospital and the destruction of two pickups.
Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Hanson said there were no serious injuries.
Hanson said that Ronald Knudsen, 21, of Lake Andes, was driving east on Highway 46, but failed to stop at that highway’s intersection with Highway 37.

Area basketball: Parkston edges Freeman, 56-52 FREEMAN — Parkston held off Freeman 17-13 in the final quarter to net a 56-52 win in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday in Freeman. Marie Malloy led Parkston with 19 points and five steals. Emma Murtha grabbed nine of the team’s 35 rebounds and Alison Fergen had five assists. Erica Herrold and McKenzie Weidenbach added nine and eight points respectively. The Trojans were 32 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Hanson led 19-14 at halftime and the Jaguars held a one-point, 29-28 edge after the third quarter, but outscored the Beavers 9-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Chevy Fischer led Chamberlain with 16 points. Mike Schwartz added 11 points and Isiah Harrison had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Area basketball: Glanzer leads MCHS in 55-38 win over Plankinton PressPass

PLANKINTON — Becca Glanzer went 15-of-18 from the free-throw line to help the Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team to a 55-38 Custer Battlefield Highway Conference win Thursday night. Glanzer hit one basket and finished with 17 points. Mackenzie Van Laecken added 15 points for the Golden Eagles and Alexa Van Laecken had 14 points and eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles shot 20-of-30 from the line while Plankinton went 5-of-16.
