Avon to celebrate completion of fire hall PressPass

AVON — Avon residents can tour the new fire hall and view fire-prevention demonstrations at an open house at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The event will begin with a free pork-loin sandwich feed, Fire Chief Kevin Tjeerdsma said. In addition to tours and demonstrations, children’s activities will take place and some fire trucks will be on display.
Firefighters, fire district board members and emergency medical technicians have been enjoying the benefits of having more room for several months.

Mount Vernon claims tourney win PressPass

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon VFW 15-16-year-old teener team won the Joe Hull Memorial tournament Sunday. Mount Vernon won three games Sunday, including a 3-1 win over Platte in the championship. Mount Vernon also defeated Irene 2-1 and Yankton 17-0 on the day to advance to the title game.

Hanson, Avon clash in Week 2 of 2010 football schedule PressPass

The Avon football team will get its chance at redemption when it plays Hanson at the Beavers’ new stadium in the second week of the regular season this fall. That is one of the highlighted area matchups on the high school football schedule for the year. The football schedules were recently posted on the South Dakota High School Association’s website.

The two teams both won Friday at the Region 4B golf tournament at Lakeview Golf Course.

Vermeulen, a junior right-hander for South Dakota State University, was named the recipient of the award for the second consecutive week and fourth time this season after appearing out of the bullpen to record a pair of victories and pitch six shutout innings for the Jackrabbits last week.

Mitchell native Miller wins team award for SMSU PressPass

Former Mitchell star Jordan Miller was named the Newcomer of the Year at the Southwest Minnesota State men’s basketball team’s end-of-the-year banquet Saturday. Miller, a 6-foot-4 redshirt freshman, was the only Mustang to start all 29 games and was the team’s second-highest scorer at 11.1 points per game.

SMVHE goes 3-1 over weekend PressPass

The Wessington Springs/Mount Vernon/Hanson/Ethan high school baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend. SMVHE started the weekend with a 5-3 loss at Parkston. Pierce Smith threw 2.1 innings and gave up five runs on three hits and took the loss. Derik Bialas struck out five and gave up two runs on two hits to earn the win for Parkston.

Van Gerpen won't run for re-election PressPass

TYNDALL — State Rep. Bill Van Gerpen, R-Tyndall, announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election this year. Van Gerpen said he has served eight years as a state representative, but he is not term-limited because the eight years were not consecutive. Still, he feels stepping aside is the right thing to do.
