Grants, loans set for wind training center

HOWARD — The president of the Maroney Rural Learning Center said a recent pledge of more than $1 million in grants and loans will be used to assist with the construction of a training facility for wind-energy workers. “It is really going to boost us to the next level of getting this thing up and getting it going,” said Randy Parry, the center’s president. “It’s moving along.”

Red Raiders trying for three-peat PressPass

Wagner’s Robert Kokesh and Alex Kocer will both be going for the same goal that their team is trying for today. After winning the state championship by a wide margin in 2008 and edging Redfield last year by one-half point, the Wagner wrestling team, along with Kokesh and Kocer, are all going for a three-peat. The Class B state wrestling tournament starts at 10 a.m. today at the Sioux Falls Arena.

Wagner wins Region 3B title; Howard takes second in 2B WAGNER — The Wagner wrestling team will send nine to the Class B state wrestling meet Friday in Sioux Falls. The Red Raiders won the Region 3B wrestling meet Saturday in its home gymnasium, racking up 165 points. Kimball/White Lake took second with 116 points, Burke/Gregory finished third with 109, Bon Homme came in fourth with 107.5 and Lyman finished in fifth with 89 points.

Hanson led 19-14 at halftime and the Jaguars held a one-point, 29-28 edge after the third quarter, but outscored the Beavers 9-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Area basketball: Knights pull away early in win over Golden Eagles With just two regular-season games left on its schedule, the Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team was looking to come out strong Monday night and slow down Stickney/Mount Vernon, which is seventh in this week’s Class A girls’ basketball poll. But the Knights’ employed a strong press and ran up a 27-6 lead after the first quarter en route to a 65-30 win over the Golden Eagles at Mitchell Christian School.

Wagner cruises to 5B title PressPass

SCOTLAND — The Wagner wrestling team cruised to its third straight District 5B championship Saturday in Scotland. The Red Raiders finished with 220 points, which was better than second-place Bon Homme’s 153 and third-place Parkston’s 145.5. Andes Central/Corsica/Platte-Geddes came in fourth with 95 points, Mount Vernon/Plankinton as fifth with 58 and Scotland had 35 points. Wagner had seven first-place wrestlers and 13 place in the top three. David Kocer (112), Austin Soukup (125), Alex Kocer (130), Derek Dickerson (135) and Mitch Breen (140) each won district titles. Teammates Robert Kokesh (160) and Steven Holzbauer (171) also won district championships. Bon Homme had four first-place wrestlers, including Lincoln Stoebner (103), Jay Kriz (119), Nathan Kloucek (145) and 152-pound champion Joey Sykora. The Cavaliers had 11 wrestlers place in the top four. ACCPG claimed two weight classes en route to the fourth-place finish. Tim Medicine Horn won the heavyweight bracket and Myles VanVuuren won at 189 pounds. Parkston’s Eric Reiff (215) won his bracket and the Trojans had 13 wrestlers finish in the top four.

Howard company headed to North Dakota PressPass

HOWARD — This week’s announcement that an organic beef processor will lease its Howard plant to an unidentified beef company came as a surprise to Howard Mayor Don Arens, but he said it’s too early to tell what the exact ramifications of the deal will be.
A prepared statement released this week announced that Dakota Beef, which purchased its Howard facility in 2003, and North Dakota Natural Beef have entered into a co-packing partnership.

McCook Central/Montrose rolls past Parkston PARKSTON — The McCook Central/Montrose boys’ basketball team led 36-19 after the first half and never looked back in a 67-33 rout of Parkston Monday night. Mark Holz led the Fighting Cougars with 12 points. Jay Holz and Shane Gottlob each had 10. Gottlob also had six rebounds and six assists. McCook Central/Montrose was 27-of-68 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line.

Area basketball: Brecke scores 30, Wagner beats Winner WINNER — Devon Brecke led all scorers with 30 points as Wagner edged Winner 56-52 in a high school girls’ basketball game Tuesday in Winner. Jessa Doom added 12 points and Jilanne Doom nabbed five of the team’s 18 rebounds. Wagner shot 17-of-40 from the field and a nearly perfect 17-of-18 from the line.
