All-SESD girls' basketball squad announced

Wagner had two athletes on the Southeast South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball first team, it was announced recently. Sophomore Devon Brecke and senior Jilanne Doom both earned first-team status. Joining them was Scotland’s April Winne, Parkston’s Marie Malloy and Bon Homme’s Cassie Schuurmans.

Area basketball: Gregory beats Platte-Geddes, 53-46 PLATTE — Gregory had three players in double digits for a 53-46 victory over Platte-Geddes in the District 13A semifinals. Aaron Schmitz led Gregory with 17 points and Nate Schmitz added 15 points. Adam Mikkelsen tallied a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Gorillas finished with 32 rebounds, shot 18-of-41 from the field and 13-of-15 from the line.

White Lake netted seven 3-pointers in the final quarter.

Wagner wins Region 3B title; Howard takes second in 2B WAGNER — The Wagner wrestling team will send nine to the Class B state wrestling meet Friday in Sioux Falls. The Red Raiders won the Region 3B wrestling meet Saturday in its home gymnasium, racking up 165 points. Kimball/White Lake took second with 116 points, Burke/Gregory finished third with 109, Bon Homme came in fourth with 107.5 and Lyman finished in fifth with 89 points.

Area basketball: Parkston edges Freeman, 56-52 FREEMAN — Parkston held off Freeman 17-13 in the final quarter to net a 56-52 win in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday in Freeman. Marie Malloy led Parkston with 19 points and five steals. Emma Murtha grabbed nine of the team’s 35 rebounds and Alison Fergen had five assists. Erica Herrold and McKenzie Weidenbach added nine and eight points respectively. The Trojans were 32 percent from the field and 50 percent from the line.

Jaguars hold off Hanson for 38-31 win Hanson led at halftime, but Corsica/Stickney outscored the Beavers 24-12 in the second half to pull away for a 38-31 win in high school boys’ basketball action Thursday at the Corn Palace. Hanson led 19-14 at halftime and the Jaguars held a one-point, 29-28 edge after the third quarter, but outscored the Beavers 9-3 in the fourth to pull away.

Wagner cruises to 5B title PressPass

SCOTLAND — The Wagner wrestling team cruised to its third straight District 5B championship Saturday in Scotland. The Red Raiders finished with 220 points, which was better than second-place Bon Homme’s 153 and third-place Parkston’s 145.5. Andes Central/Corsica/Platte-Geddes came in fourth with 95 points, Mount Vernon/Plankinton as fifth with 58 and Scotland had 35 points. Wagner had seven first-place wrestlers and 13 place in the top three. David Kocer (112), Austin Soukup (125), Alex Kocer (130), Derek Dickerson (135) and Mitch Breen (140) each won district titles. Teammates Robert Kokesh (160) and Steven Holzbauer (171) also won district championships. Bon Homme had four first-place wrestlers, including Lincoln Stoebner (103), Jay Kriz (119), Nathan Kloucek (145) and 152-pound champion Joey Sykora. The Cavaliers had 11 wrestlers place in the top four. ACCPG claimed two weight classes en route to the fourth-place finish. Tim Medicine Horn won the heavyweight bracket and Myles VanVuuren won at 189 pounds. Parkston’s Eric Reiff (215) won his bracket and the Trojans had 13 wrestlers finish in the top four.

Area basketball: Chamberlain beats Red Raiders, 57-53 CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain handed Wagner its third loss of the season Friday when it beat the Red Raiders 57-53 in high school boys’ basketball action Friday in Chamberlain. Chevy Fischer led Chamberlain with 16 points. Mike Schwartz added 11 points and Isiah Harrison had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Area basketball: No. 3 MCHS downs Hanson, 54-31 ALEXANDRIA —Mitchell Christian picked up its second big win of the week Thursday when it defeated Hanson 54-31 in high school boys’ basketball action in Alexandria. Cody Thomsen scored 18 points to lead Mitchell Christian, ranked No. 3 in this week’s Class B poll, and Jesse Tolsma scored 12 points and also had 11 rebounds and five assists.

WHITE LAKE — Kimball was down by one heading into the final quarter, but outscored White Lake 14-10 to pull away for a 44-41 win Tuesday in girls’ high school basketball action in White Lake. Jill Jandreau scored 12 points to lead Kimball and Katie Talbott had 12 rebounds. The Kiotes were 9-for-14 from the line.

Galbraith, Winner down Chamberlain PressPass

CHAMBERLAIN — Winner led by six, 19-13, at halftime, but outscored Chamberlain 34-10 in the second half to pull way for a 53-23 win Saturday in Chamberlain. Sharee Galbraith led all scorers with 15 points for Winner and she also had a game-high 11 rebounds. The Warriors were 16-for-45 from the field, 17-for-25 from the line and had 28 rebounds. Frankie Willard had seven points and Jaymee Knippling had eight rebounds to lead the Cubs, who were 7-for-32 from the field, 8-for-13 from the line and had 29 rebounds.
