George M. Hofer, 94, Freeman, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, Freeman. Private family burial was held on June 21, 2010, in Hutterthal Mennonite Cemetery.

Hanson, Avon clash in Week 2 of 2010 football schedule
The Avon football team will get its chance at redemption when it plays Hanson at the Beavers’ new stadium in the second week of the regular season this fall.
That is one of the highlighted area matchups on the high school football schedule for the year. The football schedules were recently posted on the South Dakota High School Association’s website.

Young’s 3-run homer leads Mitchell past Mount Vernon
MOUNT VERNON — Rich Wiese pitched all nine innings to help the Mitchell Mad Dogs down the Mount Vernon Cardinals, 15-10, on Tuesday night in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game in Mount Vernon.
Wiese struck out six and allowed 10 runs in the game.

Padres to host tryout in Freeman
The San Diego Padres major league baseball team will be holding a tryout camp next Wednesday, June 23, at the City Park in Freeman.
The tryout, which will begin at 9 a.m. and run through the afternoon depending on the number of participants, will be under the direction of Padres scout Hank Krause.

Pochop leads Class B field in Aberdeen
ABERDEEN — The defending champion Platte-Geddes boys’ golf team is in third place after the first day of the Class B boys’ state golf tournament Monday at Moccasin Creek in Aberdeen.
Led by Shay Nelson’s 6-over-par 78, the Black Panthers shot a team total of 246.

K/WL, Mount Vernon, Freeman girls and Wagner, C/S, Mustang boys win region titles
The Mount Vernon track and field team was confident entering Thursday’s Region 5B meet at Joe Quintal Field.
The Mustang boys entered the meet with the most athletes (24) of any team they would face and the girls have been coming on strong as the season neared its end.
Whatever the strength may have been, both took full advantage.
The Mustangs boys’ team scored 185 team points to run away from the field and the girls’ squad tallied a total of 130 points as Mount Vernon swept the team championships.

FREEMAN — Hail up to 2 inches deep blanketed areas in and around Freeman early Saturday.“It started falling around 2:30 p.m. and fell for about 20 minutes straight,” Freeman Patrol Officer Maurice Waltner said.
